Hi,
For a competent expert to be able to answer your problem, you will need to givea specific make and model of your unit.
Also include as much as possible about what you have already tried to do toresolve the problem along with exactly what is not working or what the unit isnot doing that it is supposed to do.
This will help us experts to be able to give you the correct advise the firsttime, without having to guess so much as to what is actually happening.

Thank you!

Can get analog stations recorded but not hi defination

Hi, unless the VCR/dvd recorder is hi def then you won't be able to.

Hdmi connection is hi-def, I think you can have a hi-def signal through composite, but it's your recorder thats the problem, it cannot read the number of line a hi-def signal has.

I have just found this.

Cannot set "HI" Mode to shoot TIFF Images

In order to shoot "HI" TIFF images first set the Image Size option to either "5M 2592x1944" or "3:2 2592x1728." Next, choose "HI" as the Image Quality option. "HI" is only available in one of the manual exposure modes (P, S, A or M) and is not available in the "Auto" shooting mode. If "HI" is selected and the camera is switched to "Auto" the Image Quality will automatically switch to "FINE" mode and a JPEG image will be recorded. Additionally, "HI" is only available in "S" Single frame Continuous shooting.
