It is not with Home Premium. You need to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional

    I am using an older version of Family Tree maker version 9. I was terrified to think I was going to have to try and transfer my 15K names and data to a new program in order to make it work with my new computer running Win7. I backed up my FTM data from old computer to an external hard drive. I could use the program fine from the external drive.
    I tried to copy it over to my new C drive and it would not work.
    Confusing to say the least. It works fine on the computer frunning Win7 if I run it from the external drive.
    ****** NOW I have the computer running FTM on my C drive and saving to my C drive with Win7*****
    If I open the FTM program itself – and click on Help there is a System information tab.
    If I click that it shows all kinds of info program version, physical memory,
    program directory as C:\FTW
    save directory as J:\FTW ( which is my external)
    save free space
    temp directory
    temp free space
    windows directory
    system directory
    Printer Driver
    Video driver name
    Video driver esc
    There is a window Run with a drop down that has
    Control panel
    System editor
    DOS shell
    Windows explorer
    FTM ini
    (if I open FTM ini -- I see the following)
    BrowserPath=C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    LastFile=J:\FTW\(file name).FTW
    File1=J:\FTW\(file name).FTW
    File4=C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\EDWARDS norma kite.FTW

I have a Generations tree Plus 2002 version on my XP and it was downloaded into my 7 but I can't open it? what can I do to have acess to it ?

It's not listed on Broderbund's site as being compatible with Win7,that's pretty common.The best fix,depending on the price,is to replace it with something that does work with 7.
If it was really expensive though you might want to look into learning Windows XP mode for 7.It runs as what's called a "Virtual Machine".
This isn't for someone not fairly well versed in Microsoft though,and I don't know what you're comfortable with.

There is a Family Tree Maker File Migration Utility that you run on the PC to convert either FTM 2010 or 2011 files to FTM for the Mac. Here's the link to the info on

The short answer is yes, Family Tree Maker 2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7.
The Family Tree Maker team has been working with Windows 7 for several months-even prior to the release of Family Tree Maker 2010. Since the "Release to Manufacture" (RTM) version of Windows 7 was released last August, we have done additional testing in our labs as well as with alpha and beta customers with no indication of incompatibility. Family Tree Maker 2008 and 2009 are also compatible with Windows 7.
As a point of interest, it may be helpful for people to know that we continually test Family Tree Maker with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
If you find a problem while running Family Tree Maker on your operating system, the best course of action is to contact customer support which can usually help you identify and solve the problem.

What drivers do I need to make Family tree maker Compatible with Windows 7

Start the Windows "Program Compatibility Wizard".
Tell it that you want to install a Windows XP application from CD-ROM.
Windows 7 will create a "wrapper" around the software, to make it think that it is running under Windows XP.

Yes, it should run on Windows7, as I have done it some time ago. I have experienced a problem with the some printing options to PDF format, and I need to find a amyuni document converter to overcome this problem. Everythings else works and will not cause any problems to your existing files you have compiled

How do I upgrade my family tree maker 6

The current version of Family Tree Maker is version 2010. It installs as a brand new version and ignores the old version. The old version can be uninstalled at any time.
Your version will not be automatically read by the new version. There are instructions to import your current files into the new program at this link.
There is a set of Frequently Asked Questions at this link that address the requirements to run the new version. You should read through them to make sure your system can run this program update.
