Question about Honeywell QuietClean HFD-110 Air Purifier

Open Question

My Honewell quietclean was purchased as a 2 pack through Sam's the large one works great, the shorter model has "ticked" from the beginning, has been in use for almost a year but this is finally bothering me, any ideas? is it an arcing of the panel, I thought it may have been something in the fan, but as the fan slows it does not change its frequency of ticking until the unit is finally off!

SOURCE: After cleaning my electronic filter, it runs well

It is normal to hear occasional snapping from your Electronic Air Cleaner. This occurs when larger particles are caught by the ionizer wires. Continuous snapping is not normal however, and should be investigated as outlined below: Please note that the metal electronic cells may have some sharp edges; use care when handling the cells. Wear gloves to protect your hands from being cut if needed. Remove both electronic cells. Make sure that there is no hair, dirt, sand or any debris on the bottom inside the Electronic air cleaner. If there is, remove what you can by hand. If a lot of debris is left in bottom of the Air Cleaner, you may want to use a vacuum attachment to see if you can vacuum up what you can. Do not vacuum the Pre-filter or Post filter this may damage it. Close the access door, and then turn on the Electronic Air Cleaner and the system fan. If the snapping continues with the cells removed, contact your heating and cooling contractor for service on the unit and turn off the Electronic Air Cleaner’s power. If snapping does not continue, make sure the electronic cells are clean, dry and properly installed. Inspect the electronic cells for bent collector plates, broken wires between the plates, dirt on the insulators, and damaged collector contact tabs located on the top of the cells. Make sure the pre-filters are in good condition and are in the cabinet slot farthest from the furnace (The order of the Electronic Air Cleaner Filters are from the return duct to the furnace is: Pre-Filter, electronic cell, and then Post filter, if your Electronic Air Cleaner has one). If the snapping persists and you are unable to locate any physical cause, please contact your heating and cooling contractor for service on the unit and turn off power to the Electronic Air Cleaner.

SOURCE: I am hearing a tick

Is it ticking all the time? They will do that some times after a cleaning. Also check to make sure that the cells are not touching the side or eatch other. and what is bad not much to go wrong on the filter Ion strips and the fins, the rest is in the head mabey a sail switch, they are cheap enough and the internet can beat any price out there. The are easy to install.

Sharper Image has recalled the units after Consumer Reports reported that they didn't work. They went to court Sharper Image couldn't prove that they did work, was ordered to pay all the legal bills, and filed for Chapter 11.

Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to issue a report at the end of the year on all ionizers. Their decision will effect sales of all ionizers in the U.S. With EPA data indicating that not only do they work but there harmful to use, it's beginning to look like the product is going to vanish.

Annoying ticking

My air purifier was doing the same thing. The ticking noise you are hearing is caused by dust build up on the ionizer pins. When the ionizer pins collect too much dust, they tend to start making the clicking/ticking sound caused by static electricity. The solution is simple. Take the filter out and clean it real good (follow directions on filter on how to clean). Now, with the filter out, if you look down inside the vent where the filter was, you'll see a white piece of plastic with nine holes in it that are about the size of a silver dollar. Directly in the center of each hole there will be something that looks like a needle, those are the ionizer pins and they will probably have dust built up on them. Next, with the filter out, blow out the air purifier with compressed air to clean all the dust off the ionizer pins. This should take care of the problem, it worked on mine.
