Question about Acer Aspire AX1700-U3793A PC Desktop

3 Answers

My computer wouldn't power up, I took it to best buy and the diagnostics showed the motherboard went out. Should everything else be fine, would I be able to replace the motherboard? I want to put an AX1800 in it. Would that fit?

'Diagnostics did', did it?

If going by your statement, "My computer wouldn't power up", means you press the Power On button, and nothing happens, then I do Not believe the 'diagnostics'.

If the above holds true, it sounds like a repair shop is trying to charge you for something you don't need.

Going by,

1) That you press the Power On button, and the Power Supply doesn't come on,

2) Or that you press the Power On button, and the Power Supply comes on, and the computer still doesn't work,

my diagnostics would be that you have a bad Power Supply.

A lot cheaper repair than replacing a Motherboard by a repair shop.

Suggest YOU, yourself diagnose the Power Supply first, to see if it even come on.

The method is to bypass the Power On switch.

You will be using a jumper wire to make a connection from the Green wire, to ANY Black wire, in the 20-pin ATX main power cable's connector.

The Green wire is the Soft Power On wire.
ANY Black wire is a Ground wire.

This is a photo of an ECS MCP73T-AD motherboard.
The kind that is used in the Acer Aspire AX1700 series computers,

Not an advertisement, nor sales pitch for you to buy one. Just reference for the motherboard used.

Scroll down to the large photo of the motherboard.
At the top right of the motherboard you will see a whitish connector.
Has two rows of socket holes.
10 across the top, 10 across the bottom.

This connector is what the 20-pin ATX main power cable plugs into.
Now I would like you to view a 20-pin ATX main power cable more closely,

When you open your computer case, (Computer unplugged from power), you will see your 20-pin ATX main power cable, plugged into the motherboard as shown in the photo to the far Right.

See the Green wire going down into a socket hole?
Also view the Black wires going down into the socket holes.

The Green wire is the Soft Power On wire.
(Also referred to as PS_ON)
ANY Black wire you see is a Ground wire.

Use one end of a jumper wire, to go down into the socket hole with a Green wire, and the other end of the jumper wire to go down into a socket hole, with ANY Black wire.

The jumper wire must go down into the socket hole pretty far.
The jumper wire goes down into the socket hole, right next to the wire that is already in the socket hole.

The jumper wire has to go down in the socket hole far enough, to touch a metal terminal that is on the end of the wire.
I realize that this may look complicated on 'paper', but I'm just being very detailed.

Most use a jumper wire made from a paper clip. The paper clip's diameter is thin enough to slide down into the socket hole, right next to the wire that is already in the socket hole. (And touch the metal terminal at the bottom of the wire)

The paper clip is straightened out, then bent into a U-shape.
Black plastic electrical tape is wound around the middle of the U-shape.
The taped part is what you hold onto.

Just make a brief contact with the jumper wire. No more than 2 seconds should suffice.

If the Power Supply comes on, you have a bad Power On switch.
If the Power Supply does not come on, you have a bad Power Supply.
No if's, and's, or but's about it.

Power unplugged to the computer, follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.
(Some hardware component examples are, Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, Graphics Card, {If used)

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, working on a table.
TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case to relieve your body of Static.
Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, upon your return be SURE to touch the metal frame again.

The voltage for the Soft Power On wire, (Green wire) is 5 Volts DC.
Two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC.
Just in case you have reservations.

Bad Power Supply?
Let me know, I'll tell you how to replace it, and can link videos.
Also tell you what Power Supply will work.

One of the leading causes of computer failure is a bad Power Supply.
Acer is also known for using LOW quality power supply's.

AX1800 motherboard work?
It's usually the same motherboard.
An ECS MCP73T-AD motherboard.

    To add:
If the Power Supply does come on, it may have a weak voltage power rail.
Enough power to light all the LED lights, maybe even spin fans, but not enough to turn the Processor on.

    1) ALL of the LED lights combined use less than 1 Watt of power.
    2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.
    3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power.
Depends on what Processor it is.

    Acer Aspire AX1700-U3793A?
    Intel Core2 Duo E7300. (2.66MHz)
Can use up to 65 Watts.

My x1700 wouldn't power up so I thought it was my power supply that went out.. turns out it was the video card. Only way I found that out was by removing the video card then the pc started right up. Try that.

  • Mike Oct 23, 2010

On these machines if the nvidia graphics card goes out the pc will not start up. Remove the card and try to power it up and use the onboard video.

JoeVette, thanks for the detailed description of checking the PS, with your input and the solution found here, I've decided to JOIN this site!

Thank you so much for figuring out that ALL THAT WAS WRONG WITH THIS ACER ASPIRE X1700 WAS THE VIDEO CARD!!!!

What now, should I order a new one VID CARD for HDMI functionality, because the onboard HDMI out doesn't work now!

    Thanks MIKESTORY!

This happened to my ax1700 the video card was fried. BUT! I took my old card out and was able to run the computer of its own video VGA cable.
So next I went to best buy and bought a video card (visiontek Raden HD 54550)
    Installed this and nothing!!!
    - Power Led comes on
    - fan is spinning

The monitor says no signal (i have checked the monitor with my laptop it's fine.
I removed the video card again and tryed to run it of the vga output on the computer and now that wont work either.

OMG I love you so much! You fixed my problem, after I installed a new power supply, it still wouldn't power on, I went on this topic and found your post! You're a lifesaver!!!! xxxxxx

  • Mike Apr 20, 2011

I did the same thing Sara. I bought a brand new power supply off ebay and it still wouldn't power up like you said so i got to trying things and found this out. And can you believe when i sent the power supply back to the ebay dealer they tried to tell me that the power supply they sent me didn't work when they got it back? I fought them until I got my full refund cause i knew they were b/sing me because it worked right before I sent it back!

  • guyello Jun 11, 2011

The same with me on 6/11/2011. Replaced the power supply with no success. Started searching the Web and found this post, that was it. Removed the add-on video card and used the VGA output and computer fired right up. Now will look into a replacement video card. Will have to stay with the original model unless I can find one with same power consumption or less. Thanks MikeStory.

Hey guyello the card i got that to replace the stock card was the nvidia NX8400GS PCI-Express 2.0 low profile card from ebay I think. Works great for me cause it runs world of warcraft great. Lower settings of course because it's a cheap card I think i payed maybe 50 for it but i'm happy :) Good luck to ya and so glad I could help everyone. I hope anyone else that has this problem get's redirected to this site right off so they dont go out and buy power supply's like we did hehe.

On that low-in computer I wouldn't waste my money. Just buy a new machine if you believe Best Buy.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

My Acer Aspire 6530-5753 laptop stopped charging the battery even though the power supply light was on--it's an aftermarket charger from Radio Shjack. The battery ran dead and it wouldn't run on...

This is not the motherboard. The batteries in laptops have electronic sensors in them. When they reach the end of life, they stop the computer from turning on. Once that happens it wont power on with the battery in or out. Batteries are not that expensive. Only about 25 dollars.

I recently dropped my HP Compaq Presario laptop V5209US and took it to Fry's electronics for diagnostics. I wasnt able to open the CD door after it was dropped. They told me it has a ''bad optical drive...

If everything else was working fine (until today) and just the cd-drawer would not open, a damaged systemboard (or motherboard) is highly unlikely.

1) What does "not turn off"? The Laptop or the CD drive?
2) To check what is exactly damaged you could power down the laptop and remove the CD drive entirely. Then power on the laptop. If everything works fine only your cd drive was damaged.

Make sure that there is not a power switch on the back of your computer. Alot of computers have a power switch on back of the power supply as a master shutoff.

Not booting, no power

There are 4 major components that can die:

1. Power supply.
2. Motherboard.
3. Processor.
4. Memory

It is more likely that the motherboard died to. Thing is that as you buy the components to fix the problem you might get to a cost of a new computer all together.
