Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

When I open My Computer and look at the properties of My Book, it says that there are still 330GB remaining, but when I try to copy ANY file, even as small as a blank word document, I'm told that there is not enough space remaining to copy anything. I've tried running the disk error check, defragmenter, and disk cleanup and I still get the same thing. Is there a way to get my 330GB's back? Or are they somehow lost forever?

Maybe the disk quota on your my book is enabled. To check just right click your "my book" then click on properties. Then go to the :quota" tab and disable or remove the check on "enable quota management"

I wish to download windows outlook express to my new computer. I would like to transfer all the data including email addresses from my office PC onto this new Toshiba laptop

  1. Open Outlook Explorer.
  2. Right-click on the Folder at the top of the left pane, and, from the context menu that appears, select Properties (see Figure 1 below). If you are using Outlook 6, you need to expand the Folders and right-click on the Inbox (see Figure 2 below).
  3. When you select the Properties option, you are presented with a dialog box with the location of the Outlook folders (see Figure 3 below). The full path is displayed as a label in Outlook 6 and as a text box under the Advanced tab in Outlook XP or 2000.
  4. Select the entire path from "C:\" to "\Outlook Express". Do not copy the filename given after "\Outlook Express." For example, if the path is C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{B7ABE5FE}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx, you need only the C:\Documents and Settings\Arun\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{B7ABE5FE}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
  5. Copy, paste, and save this path in a text file.
  6. Open a Windows Explorer window, and paste the path into the address bar and press Enter.
  7. Before proceeding to copy the folders to a CD or flash drive, you need to check if there are any hidden files or folders in the Outlook Express folder. To check this, check the Show Hidden Files and Folders in the View tab of the dialog box that you get when you select Folder Options in the Tools menu.
  8. The next step is to select all the files and folders in the Outlook folder. If you are using a version previous to Windows XP, you will need some CD burning software to copy the files to the CD. Otherwise, you can simply paste the files to the CD or flash drive. Do not forget to copy the text file containing the path in both cases.
  9. You now have all the emails, calendars, tasks, and other important things from Outlook, but you may also want to copy the address book. To copy the address book, use the Export option in the File menu of the Outlook Express. Once exported, use the method described above to copy it to the flash drive or to the CD. Now you are all set to move your Outlook messages to the new computer.
  10. Boot the new computer. Use the path you stored in the text file to open the Outlook Folder on the new computer. To do this, copy the path from the text file, open a Windows Explorer window, paste the path into the address bar, and hit Enter.
  11. Copy all the files from the CD or flash drive to the Outlook Express folder. When you are prompted to overwrite the files and folders, select Yes to All.

External hard drive use 101!

When you plug the drive into your computer it should come up as a new drive letter (drive E: for example). To back up files right click onto the files that you want to backup and left click onto copy then open the drive letter for the my book and right click and left click onto paste. this should copy any files that you would like to back up to the I book to restore simply reverse the process.

Transfering address book and Favorite Center fom one computer - -

Your Favorites are stored in Cocuments ans Settings folder under your name and in the Favorites folder.
Eg. C:\Documents and Sttings\"your name"\Favorites
Copy the Favorites folder to a USB memory stick and then copy it to your 2nd computer in the C:\Documents and Sttings\"your name" folder - exactly as per your Toshiba.

To transfer your e-mail address book from one computer -
1. Open Outlook on your Toshiba, then click on File, then Export, then Address Book - save this file (remember the file name and the location where you saved this file.
2. Copy this file to a USB memory stick.
3. Open Outlook on the Gateway computer.
4. Then click in File, then Import, then Address Book, then to the USB memory stick (could be your E: drive) where the exported address book file is located.
A copy of the address book is now in your Gatway computer.

My Book 1Tb will not let me copy movies on to it.

To transfer files larger than 4GB to the drive, the harddrive must have an NTFS File system. Unfortunately, the FAT32 File system is not capable of handling a single file larger than 4GB (to be exact, one byte less than 4GB). Follow the steps below to format the harddrive with an NTFS File system:
Warning, all data on the harddrive will be lost! Please backup the data on the harddrive before proceeding.
  1. Locate My Computer (Computer in Vista). Right-click on the harddrive and select Format.
  2. Select NTFS from the File system drop-down list.
  3. Select Quick Format as the Format option and click Start.
  4. Note: If NTFS is not an available option, close the Format window and follow steps 4-9.
  5. Right-click My Computer (Computer in Vista) and select Properties.
  6. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
  7. Expand Disk drives and right-click on the harddrive. Select Properties.
  8. Click on the Policies tab and select "Optimize for performance.”
  9. Click OK.
  10. Repeat steps 1-3.

Suppose you're using MS Windows... Click right button on (I) drive then check out "Properties" of your drive. In "General" tab you should see "Used space:" and "Free space:" If in "Used space:" is something like "24 KB" then it looks like you lost your files :( Otherwise somehow may happen that your files became "hidden" or "system" files. In "Control Panel" open "Folder Options" in tab "View" check/uncheck properties of "Hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)" to see what is in your (I) drive. Anyway may be helpful some program which can recover accidentally deleted files. Try to google "recover files" for such program.
