Yes it is possible to access your PC but not really likely. First are you in an apartment or where houses are REALLY close together? If not it is doubtful that anyone will get into your system. To test this, take your wife's laptop out to the street and see if it gets a signal and can logon.
Generally after 75 feet or 3-4 walls, you cannot get logged on because the signal is too weak. Yes, you can buy high powered antenna but unless someone is setting in your driveway then the odds are low that they can get in.
Now to insure that you are safe you need to set up your router with a password. To do that you need the manual. I need the manufacture and model # of your router. It should be on the bottom.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

Linksys router password

To reset the Linksys back to the default settings - Press and hold the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router with the power ON for 20 secs. then release the RESET button.
To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

Setup wireless network by getting to the router page

Hit the wireless tab and type network name in wireless network name.
Once you click on save settings your network is ready to use
Also secure the network by clicking on the wireless security and clisk on the security tab to protect your network.

Trouble creating wireless access point from D-Link DI-514 router

You should be able to plug the D-Link into any of the Linksys wired ports (not the Uplink port) and tell the D-Link to get an IP address from the Linksys router (as long as the Linksys router has DHCP turned on). Verify that both boxes are on the same network (192.168...) and don't have the same IP address. What happens when you do this? Can you get to the Linksys & D-Link from a wired workstation?

Linksys wireless adapter and linksys wrt54g2 router not seeing each other

its possible that the wireless card does not have the correct wireless settings.

Open the linksys wireless monitor on your wife's laptop.
Go to the profiles tab, highlight the default SSID then click on edit at the bottom. It will search for the wireless network, from the list of networks that it will show you, click the name of your wireless network, in if the network is secured you will be ask to put in your network key. Then click connect. Then it will say that you profile was successfully configured. then click connect to network. It will take you back back to the screen where you saw no association to the access point, check if you will now get a new message. On that same screen click the more info button at the upper left hand side. Check the IP address it should be 192.168.1.x. If you have that IP then you can test if you will be albe to get online.

if you still have any problem just reply to this post.

Trying to network xp pc to wireless laptop

Right click on the drive you want to share. Ex: C:\Vol-xx = name. In the pop up window click Sharing & Security. This needs done to all the drives you want access too. To share a printer. Everyone must have the printer drivers installed. The Pc that has a direct connection to the printer must also Share the printer on the network. Open Printer & Faxes, highlight the printer you want to share. Click File than click Sharing follow windows instructions.
Small suggestion regards to the wireless side of the network. Suggest you setup security so others close too you can not tap into your network. (common).

No Installation CD

No it's not needed, the main things you need to know is the IP address that the router is set to and it's login details which hopefully your friend can give you. (default IP: 192.168.1.1, default login and password: admin and admin)

After that, as long as your HS Internet modem has an ethernet port you would connect that to the Linksys and your PC's to the routers LAN ports. You can then also login to the router and setup the wireless part if you have any wireless devices to use with it.
