Begin by checking to see if the disposer is jammed. Use a 1/4 " allen wrench to see if you can spin the disposal. If not then something has jammed the unit. Remove it from the power supply and remove the jammed item. If it spins freely then see if the overload protector has popped out. It is a red square button on the bottom of the unit. Turn the disposal switch to the off position and push the reset button back in and turn the power back on. If this continues to trip then the unit will need to be serviced or replaced. Check the under side of the motor looking for 6-sided socket at the center. Make sure the power to the unit is off, then get a hex key that fits the socket and try to turn the motor in both directions. Usually, something solid gets lodged in the grinder burrs like dinner ware or similar things. Shine a flashlight in the cavity to locate whatever it is. If there is an overload circuit breaker on the motor, push it to reset. Hope this helps!

Badger 5-81 motor buzzing, blades spinning, won't grind

Replace the whole thing. They are not that expensive and are easy to replace. The issue could be bad motor part or the shaft came loose from the grinding disk.

My Bager 5 is making grinding noise when it's on

What you hear may be the triangular metal pieces spinning around at the bottom center of the sink drain. Look in side with a flash light and you will see them, they are riveted to the bottom of the drain. They spin when the disposal is on. There are also two cylinders with coffee bean sized holes in both that rub against each other when they turn. The hole edges should be able to cut what ever is caught between them.

DISPOSAL HUMS BUT CANT FIND RESET BUTTON ON WHITMAN

The problem is not that you tripped the circuit breaker. Problem is that your disposer is jammed.
Over time, food particles may accumulate in the grind chamber and baffle. Here's what to do:
1. Place stopper in sink opening and fill sink halfway with warm water.
2. Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with water. Turn disposer on and remove stopper from sink at same time to wash away loose particles.
If that doesn't help, you have to release the disposer jam.
1. Turn off disposer and water.
2. insert one end of self-service wrenchette into center hole on bottom of disposer. (It's a funny looking slightly "S" curved tool.)
3. Reach into disposer with tongs and remove object(s). Allow disposer motor to cool for 3 - 5 minutes, then lightly push red reset button on disposer bottom. (It maybe indented so almost unoticeable.) If motor remains inoperative, check service panel for tripped circuit breaker or blown fuses.

Ok my ace 2000 disposal hums. blades move freely when i put my hand inside. the 1/4" allen wrench doesn't fit in the opening at the bottom. my sink fills with water but eventually drains, so I...

Sounds like the starter winding is bad.
The cutter disc is welded directly to motor shaft. So is the allen wrench fitting.
So if disc rotates freely, then you should be able to feel the allan wrench fitting rotate too.
Use broomstick instead of hand down disposal.
If motor hums and cutter disc does not spin, but cutter disc can be moved freely, then disposal needs to be replaced.
I wish they made repairable motors so that metal and copper doesn't get thrown into the scrap recycle metal bin.

One of the two blades appears loose inside the disposal and makes a lot of noise when running. Disposal appears to work fine otherwise.

If disposal works fine and doesn't vibrate the tubular drain pipes loose causing a leak, then it's ok to use.

The grinding sound is probably the bearings rusted.
The bearings are sealed from water, but eventually the seal breaks and bearing rust.
The 'loose' metal pieces attached to cutter disk were probably like that from beginning.
Put a vacuum cleaner hose into disposal and see if anything is rolling around inside.

Your motor is damaged and is not worth repairing on a garbage disposal. Recommend you get online and look for a good waste king disposal. They have the best warranties, incredible prices, lifetime corrosion warranty, have 1000 rpm's faster than the other brands so the food is liquified for the septic systems, and I have never seen one that was jammed in 36 yrs. of service! My bager 5 seems locked up when you hit the switch it hums how do I get it unlocked.

One day years ago, our new garbage disposal got stuck, and started humming instead of grinding. My mom turned off the switch, then she grabbed a wood-handled broom and stuck it down in the disposal. I was wondering, what's that lady doing.

She took the wood handled broom and placed it on the disposal cutter wheel that was stuck. Then she wedged the broom against the sink opening, She pushed the cutter wheel forward until it was free. Then she showed me that the cutter wheel is supposed to spin freely even when the switch is off.

That's how I learned to un-stick a garbage disposal.

The blades on my Sinkmaster 550 garbage disposer needs replacing. How do I take it apart and replace the blades?

that is a project I wouldn't reccomend. besides the "blades" are not really changable. The blades are a piece of metal cut at an angle and when they spin they grind the food by rubbing against a series of holes in the base.
if the disposal is not grinding the food, then its time to replace the disposal.
