Question about Ovens

1 Answer

I need wiring schmatics for a 1950s-1960s GE double range electric stove my grandma has been using up to this day. It's still in awesome condition, but one of the coil burners is not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated! - Connie

Hi Connie. I think we can find you a coil burner but... we need to have a model number to help you find it. Would you look around the oven for a model number please so I can help you. FYI all Fixya Experts are going to ask for this same information. If it is not in the original post... each one of us has to ask you. for a model number. It does not go public.

    Thanks

We think it might have to do with the wiring. However, here's the model# J408TIWH-15.2. Thank you Kelly!

Hi again Connie.

The model number did not cross so I am trying a differnt route to see if this helps.

It is common on an older range to have the wires degrade where the range wiring connects to the burner. Usually only one wire fails and it is easily spotted once you remove the burner.

I think you can find your surface burners here.
http://www.repairclinic.com/GE-Range-Stove-Oven-Parts?s=b3a13c42&z=50

NOTE the ones that are kits.... I would recommend that direction simply because it has all the stuff you would need to fix existing wiring problems.

This is ONE kit example for and 8 inch burner:
http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=b3a13c42i2573&PartID=2573

This is ONE kit example for and 6 inch burner:

http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=b3a13c42i2573&PartID=2573

I am not 100% sure these are the burners you need but if you can compare what you have vs these examples or the rest of them in the first link (262 items listed) not so many surface elements..... I am pretty sure even the average handyperson can get this going.... Just make sure to REMOVE all power from the unit when dealing with the burners.

Let me know if you need more help or... see if you can sort out why the model number you passed did not cross and pass that here again.

Thanks,

Kelly

No stove wires hooked up to neutral

The older electric hookups for ranges used only the 2 hot wires and a ground. Somewhere on the range the neutral and the ground should be connected together. This connection is no longer accepted by the National Electrical Code, but no one is going to force you to change the wiring unless you change the range.
Where is the ground wire attached? Some ranges had a metal jumper to connect the neutral to the ground. Your oven element is 240 volt only. It does not need a neutral. The ground/neutral wire is for some of the controls and the clock.

I will soon purchase a GE Double Oven (no stove top). I need to know what amperage I need to wire my kitchen for. 30? 40? 50? thanks.

A full upright range including 4 hotplates, oven and grill elements is generally rated about 8.0 to 10.0 kilowatts. The normal circuit in Aust. is a 32 amp circuit. Check the kilowatt rating of the double oven but I don't think it will be any higher than 6.0 kilowatt. If so the 30 amp circuit will be fine.

Oven wont come on F8 error on screen

Depending on the brand. GE would be the erc or electronic range control. If any other brand the lock assembly on the self clean has gone bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps. Rick

F1 beeping

hello there:
Please read this carefully and follow the tips and this will help you find out what is exactly the problem ok
How to test many brands of Ranges that are flashing a F1 fault code: You have either a bad ERC (clock) or a bad touch pad.
  1. Disconnect power to stove
  2. Gain access to the back of the clock (electronic range control or ERC).
  3. Unplug the touch pad ribbon connector from the ERC. This will be a flat wire approx. 1 1/2" to 2" wide.
  4. Make sure everything is clear and will not short out when power is turned back on.
  5. Turn power back on to stove.
  6. Watch for the F1 and listen for the beep.
  7. If you get the F1 and beep, replace the ERC.
  8. If after approx. 30 minutes you do NOT get the F1 and hear the beep, replace the touch pad.
NOTE: Some models incorporate the touch pad and the clock as one part. * We have seen a few of the newer Maytag ranges with a F1 fault code and the problem was the oven temp sensor, check carefully the wires to and from the oven temp sensor!!

I have a double gas oven and no instructions

I have an O'Keefe & Merritt double oven gas stove. The model number is 72 7242 23. The upper oven is about the size of a large microwave and sits above the range burners. The lower (full-size) oven is below the burner unit and includes a broiler draw below it.
So, when you say, double oven, I wonder if you are just talking about the main oven with broiler drawer (both of which are below the burner unit.)

Mine was a builder-supplied appliance in the new house we purchased in 1986. The upper oven has never performed very well. And, yes the upper oven can only be used for baking.

I have an instruction manual for it, but it doesn't provide that much information. Getting parts for it is extremely difficult, since Tappan is no longer manufacturing this brand. (I've been trying to locate a flat oven ignitor for the upper oven and can't seem to find a replacement that's the same 6-1/3" length.) In the 1980s Tappan apparently purchased O'Keefe & Merritt and marketed this brand for several years. Models originally manufactured by O'Keefe & Merritt in the 1930s-1950s are considered collectible antique stoves!
