Canon A520 powershot camera. You suggewted lithium batteries

I bought four new lithium batteries with a voltage of 1.70 and 1.69 before inserting and 1.677 after, No change at all. Picture appears for 15 seconds beeps and and goes off. lens does not move and controls make no difference. As far as I know nothing has been dropped and the camera looks new. I cannot hear any click or any sound like the lens is trying to move. I used to repait Canon EOS cameras so I think I can go ib it if necessary.

I can guess better than that. My camera draws .4 milliamps which is less than a working camera so I see no excessive power drain. I am sorry I bothered you. I mentioned the battery voltage before and after I tried the lithium battery which was still above the rated voltage of the batteries.

Just try using a different brand of batteries. I seem to have the same problem with my camera. It accepts certain brands, but not other, even if brand new. Dont know the reason for this..

But please try and let me know..

Yes, I do understand, but like I said, sometimes, changing the brand of the battery may help. For example, I have a Samsung Digimax S800, an dit works ONLY if I use Energizer or Worthington batteries. None of the other brands seem to work. I do not know why this happens (at least on my camera), but I guess there would be no harm in trying a different brand. That would be a cheaper alternative than trying an expensive repair job..

Most likely a faulty mainboard which is causeing the powerdrain - replace the mainboard.

Canon Powershot A520: The camera it self shuts down and start again. There seems to be problem with firmware. Please help on this

I believe you should do a complete reset. If this can be done through the Menu all good. If not, remove the memory back-up battery for some 30 seconds and re-insert. In most cases this cures the problem. The back-up battery I think (from memory) is next to the AA batteries, a little grey cover with CR1220 stamped on it or something. Good Luck

Having to reset date and time

Solution: Replacing the date battery PowerShot A510 and A520

Replacing the Date Battery If the Date/Time menu appears when the camera power is turned on, the date battery charge is low and the date and time settings have been lost. Please purchase a lithium coin battery (CR1220) and replace it as follows.
Please note that the first date battery may appear to expire relatively quickly after you purchase the camera. This is because it is installed in the camera at the point of manufacture, not when you make the purchase. caution_a70.gifBe particularly careful to keep the date batteries out of the reach of children. Seek medical assistance immediately if a child swallows a battery since corrosive battery fluids could damage the stomach or intestinal wall.
  1. Confirm that the camera is turned off.

  2. Open the terminal cover and use your finger nail to pull out the battery holder.

  3. Pull open the battery holder in the direction indicated by the arrow (1). Remove the battery by pulling it up in the direction indicated by the arrow (2).

  4. Insert a new battery with the ( ) side facing up.

  5. Replace the battery holder back and close the terminal cover.

  6. When the Date/Time menu appears, set the date and time.

note_icon_a70.gif After purchasing the camera and turning on the power for the first time, although the Date/Time menu will appear, you do not need to replace the date battery. If you ever dispose of your camera, first remove the date battery for recycling according to the recycling system of your country.

Try to clean batteries host's contacts (cover and inside). By the way, did you charged the batteries before inserting them to camera. In case of a positive answer did you checked their voltage after charging ?
