A few cheap n easy ideas I hope will help you...

  • You could try using a car radiator flush treatment such as rust & scale inhibitor to flush the water tank.

  • Fill water tank with Coca-Cola . Let it soak at least overnight and rinse out thoroughly.Think im crazy? Leave a old coin in a glass a coke for a few days and see what happens!!
  • Refrain from using tap water to fill the iron. Use distilled water ,it's has less of the impurities that cause rust and other metal-oxides forming
  • If all else fails use a small spray bottle of water on the clothes that are at most risk of being soiled.
That way you can add fragrance oil or other things to the water that would normally get boiled off /or pollute the water tank :)

Brown steam

Brown steam is normally associated with internal rust in the iron. descaling may help clean it up. To descale make a solution of 3 parts distilled water to one part white vinegar, about a teacup full and pour into the irons water reservoir. Switch the iron on and set it on to the highest steam setting. Place a clean tea towel or similar on the ironing board and steam-clean it with the iron for a few minutes. The vinegar/distilled water solution will break down and expel the limescale. Turn off the iron (unplug). Pour out the water and vinegar solution. Pour clean distilled water into the iron reservoir and steam-clean a new clean cloth for a few minutes. this will remove any risidual vinegar etc. Turn off and unplug the iron and pour out the remaining water.

Rust colored steam that stains clothing ironed

Hi, Brown water and whitescale are often the result of the water you use in the iron... If you have scale, white vinegar will clean that... For brown water, empty the iron, rinse out the insides with bottled water, and then use the bottled water instead...

Simac Stirelli 9000 steam iron spews rusty steam and smells like burnt apples

Your steam iron has been filled with 'tap' water that may have been contaminated (thus the smell). Rust develops more rapidely in Steam Iron chambers when distilled water is not used: to clean the 'enclosure' of the steam iron from rust and smell, over a sink or outdoor, fill 'cold iron' with a 50/50 water/vinegar and a teaspoon of bicarb, let it stand for about 10 mins, then turn the iron on and let it steam the mixture out while shaking the iron gently (DO NOT BURN YOURSELF! STEAM IS HOTER THAN BOILED WATER!). Refill and Steam flush again with Clean water (distilled preferred). Repeat the steps until the rust has been completely dissolved (check by steam ironing on clean pieces of disposible kitchen paper towel. Use the Power steam or Flush function of the Iron if available. Hope it helps!

Leaks water out all the time. Clothes wet or rust marked.

OMG, how frustrating to be ironing and water shoot out everywhere from this iron....So, to remedy it, I have turned off the steam, use it as a dry iron, and have a spray bottle handy to spray as I iron...love the feel of this iron, but hate the water everywhere...

I got something on the bottom of my rowenta steam iron. How do I remove this? Can I use an SOS or brillo pad?

I would not use that type scrubbing pad. It will probably get steel fibers in the steam ports -- if you don't get them all out you could get rust on your clothes.

Try a stiff fiber scrubbing pad -- non-metallic. If you use soap, check to see if the steam ports need cleaning of whatever soap may have gotten in them.

And then maybe run some steam though the iron -- like steam iron an old rag to clean it up before actually putting the iron on good clothes.

Steam keeps coming out rusty, leaves marks on clothing. model ir5410

The iron needs to be taken apart and cleaned. If it gets rusty again, it's a poorly designed iron and you'd be better off with a replacement. Steam Irons should not rust!!

Rust coming from iron

See if you can get a hold of some CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust). It's a cleaner most drug stores and hardware stores carried in the states. Pour that into the system and then flush it out. Make sure the CLR isn't in the iron before you use it again.

Use filter water in your iron in case there is rust or sediment in the tap.

Rust

No. The machine is not gone but you may have to replace the steam compartment of the machine.. You can also try cleaning the rust.. You will need to get a pair of gloves open the steam compartment and clean the rusted area with dilute oxalic acid.. It will work more often than not..
Good Luck!
