Some laptop USBs don't have enough power to run a fan. Has it ever worked?

yes, it is fairly new, been working for about 3 months

Either the computer or the cooler isn't working properly. I'd return the cooler to the store and try for an exchange. If you go to the manufacture, they will charge you shipping which is more than it is worth.

i got this fan from mircocenter for about $10, would they let me exchange it without a reciept?

  • Jim Winger Oct 01, 2010

I doubt it. You are probably just looking at buying another cooler.

  • jc7993 Oct 01, 2010

i tried rewiring it, thinking that the connections might be loose but have no luck

  • Jim Winger Oct 01, 2010

It is probably the fan. They are pretty cheap in those. I have one and it also quit working. I just use it to elevate the bottom of the laptop. I've not had any heat problems.

oh okay, thanks for the advice!

Samsung external hard drive

!! You have failed to provide a detailed problem. !!

External hard drives are plug-and-play devices used to store music, video and data files. Once the drive is connected, the computer checks its systems for the appropriate drivers, loads them, and the external drive is ready to use. If the computer does not recognize the external drive, plug it into another computer to ensure the drive is not corrupted. If the drive is good, a few simple steps should help re-enable the drive for use.
Switch the power button to "off." Disconnect the power cord from any extension cords or power strip, then re-seat the power cord into the hard drive. Connect the cord directly into an outlet and power up the drive. If the drive is powered and still not working, check the data cable. Power down the hard drive and disconnect the data cable from the computer. Wait 30 seconds to one minute. Reconnect the data cable and power up the drive. If the drive is not detected, power down the hard drive and connect the cable to a different port. Power up the drive. If the drive is detected but not working, check for a missing driver. Click on the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Select "Device Manager" and double-click "Disk Drives." Right-click the yellow exclamation point and install the missing driver. Close the Device Manager. If the drive is detected but not working check to ensure it has an assigned drive letter. Disconnect all devices connected by USB cables from the computer. Reconnect the drive's data and USB power cables directly into the computer. Click on the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Click on "Disk Management," right-click the external hard drive, click "change drive letter and path," and click "Add." Assign a drive letter. Avoid using A, B or C (C is usually assigned to the computer's internal hard drive). Click "OK" close the window. If the drive is detected but not working, check whether the drive is in sleep mode. Disconnect all devices connected by USB cables from the computer. Reconnect the drive's data and USB power cables directly into the computer. Click the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Select "Device Manager" and double-click "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Double-click the first instance of "USB Root Hub" or "Root Hub." Check for the hard drive. If the drive is not visible, move to the next instance of "USB Root Hub." Continue checking each instance until the hard drive is located. Once located, click the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" box, click "OK," then close the Device Manager. Power the computer down, wait 30 seconds to one minute, and power the computer back up to ensure the drive is detected.

My computer don't see mt toshiba 500 GB external disk. I had Win XP with SP3 and my external disk is connected to a USB hub with 8 ports. I had a pen connected to that hub and the computer see it. But...

Your USB hub cannot provide enough power for your external hdd, you can try to plug it in directly to any free USB port for the mean time to check if its detected or not, if it has a power button ( which is not normal for regular USB powered EXT HDD) make sure that it is on, if its still not working try to use a different cable, a known good cable or plug it in to a different computer to check if its your USB port, or the usb cable or the ext hdd that is causing the issue

Hope this help.

I have a maxtor 500 external hard drive when i plug it to the mains it goes to start up for 10 seconds then dies. Any ideas?

External Hard drives usually draw more current (power) from the PC's USB port and some times even the power being provided by PC's USB port is too less for HDD. In both cases the HDD tries to start but will eventually fail. To cater this you need to buy USB cable with two USB connectors at PC end. Plugging both the connectors to the PC will draw required power from the PC and your HDD will work fine. Also try to connect your HDD to some other PC and see if it works their or not. farhanwaheed.jpg

My book essential has worked for several months now til now.... the white light is just blinking and my computer doesntg seem to recognize it anymore what should i do?

From the user manual (click here) on page 4, the slow blinking means that the drive is in standby mode.
The user manual does not explain how to get the drive out of standby mode, but you may want to try the procedure for powering off the drive that is on page 34 that say to press the power button on the back of the unit and wait for the LEDs to turn off.
If the unit does not power-off on its own within a few minutes of pressing the power button, the next thing to do is the following:
Shut down your computer with the drive still connected and powered-up. Once the computer is completely powered-down (no lights on or noise coming from the computer, unplug the power cord of the external USB hard drive and wait a minute. After you've waited a minute with the external USB hard drive unplugged from power, plug the power cord back in to the external USB hard drive Make sure the USB cable from the drive to the computer is properly connected. Power-up your computer using the power button on the computer and let the computer boot as usual. Once the computer has booted, check whether the external USB hard drive is now available.

Cooling fan not turning on

There is a problem with the power supply cable that I have found in several of these. The wires break or short at the plug. You can purchase a replacement Multi-volt power supply from Walmart, set it for no more than 5 volts and plug it into the fan. It will work. I actually have mine set at 1.5 volts. Another problem with this could be that the USB port you are using is not coming on or has shorted out. Test the port with a thumb drive to make sure it still works. If it does then use the external power supply.

Integral ide external HDD reader - blue light wont stop flashing, and wont read all data - any ideas

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Hope this helps you out.
Goodluck!

Western Digital external USB 2.0 Problem

Buy an External USB 2.0 Hub with the 5.0V power supply. I have a TARGUS 4 Port Hub. MY WD2500XMSB works fine thru the HUB, but will not work using any cable (even the one that came with it) when directly connected to the USB port on my computer. The power consumption of passports sometimes exceeds the .5 milliwat rating for the ports and ccause the port power to interrupt (see USB 2.0 specifications). The external hubs with external power have a higher power output usually an can power the passport drives. CW Rumsey

My external hard drive wont conect to my computer.

Is this a new drive? has it worked before? the usual sequence is to connect the external drive to a power source first, and then connect the usb cables to the PC. IF you know the usb cables are good and have verified that they are connected properly, try connect to a different usb port on the PC, sometimes ports go bad. If that still doesn't work, the most likely the hard drive has gone bad.

My two front usb ports cant read usb hard drives

Some external USB drives require external power sources. Typically this is done either with an external power supply that connects to the drive or a second USB cable that connects to the drive and a second usb port on the pc. I have even seen one drive that comes with a Y cable. one end goes to the drive and the 2 usb plugs go to the pc.
