Question about GPS

It has stopped speaking. Everything else works fine. We have checked that the voice is definitely switched on. It's a TomTom about 4 years old.

The spoken direction mode only works when you have selected the "computer voice" option. If you have changed the voice in the settings, spoken direction will be disabled. Also, in the settings, there is an option to switch off the speaker. Make sure you have not done this. Finally, tap the bottom left hand side of the screen and move the slider bar to the right to increase volume.

My Tomtom XL displays everything in spanish, but speaks in english. I can't find a menu to change these settings.What can I do?


You will have to check 2 settings. First one. Tap on the screen. Tap on change preferences. Tap on the arrow 3 times. You should be on page Preferences 4 of 6 by now. Tap on change language. Tap on English US. Tap on Yes.
Second one: Tap on the screen. Tap on change preferences. Tap on the arrow once (You should be on Preferences 2 of 6 by now. Tap on change voice. Select a voice which has English US after the name. Test and select. Go through voice preferences. Tap Done.

Voice stopped working suddenly


Sounds to me ethier the mute is on and not showing or the speaker is out

Not speaking street names


To get your TomTom to speak street names, you will need to change the voice from a recorded voice to a computer voice. This can be done by:
  • Connect your TomTom to your computer
  • When the TomTom asks do you want to connect to the computer, choose Yes
  • Open the TomTom Home application
  • Click on the 'Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras, etc.' button
  • Click on the 'Voices' button
  • Click on the 'Computer Voices' button
You can now select a voice to install on the device.
Once you have installed a voice, change it by
  • Disconnect the TomTom from your computer
  • Turn on the TomTom
  • Touch the screen to bring up the menu
  • Touch 'Change Preferences'
  • Touch 'Voice Preferences'
  • Touch 'Change Voice'
  • Use the Left / Right arrows to navigate to the voice you just installed (Look for the word 'computer' in the upper right corner by the male/female option)
  • Touch the 'Select' button

My Tom Tom XL 330 S doesn't name the streets-just says TURN HERE


Hi,

When you choose a voice on your tomtom device, you will need to select a voice with the word 'computer' next to gender of the voice you select.

this will activate two option on the next screen allowing you to tick read street names.

My TomTom GPS has lost his voice


Mine does that when the battery is getting low. Try powering it off the charger and see if it talks again.

Tomtom xl 330.s wont speek street names


Yes Nickarino is right.
When I switched on my new tom tom it gave me that option to speak street names and it vanished after selected a different voice. I checked all manuals and web references in Tom Tom - none of them list it.
Like Nick said - what you need to do is swtich the voice type to SAMANTHA and it will show the option "Read Street Names Loudly". I jumped on it and said yes ..!!!

I just bought the tomtom 130 s and I cannot get it to speak


Be sure to select a voice that is a "Computer Voice" not a "recorded voice" The GPS uses voice synthesis or "Phonems" to speak the text. not all voices support this. Change voice in preferencs to fix this!

I don't know if this will help any, but when I updated my recently purchased tomtom go 720 with the newest app (8.3) and the new voices, map, etc...the voice feature completely stopped working on my unit. Everything else was working fine except the voice. However, I had installed an 8 gig sd card into my tomtom and put all the updates on the sd card because I was running low on the internal memory. Bythe way, only the voice instructions were not working..it would still play mp3's through the internal speaker, so I knew it must be a software problem. After several days with no voice instructions, I then proceeded to re-format the sd card and start all over, as the problem appeared to be a software issue. After re-formatting the sd card, I removed it and installed the back-up file from my tomtom before I did the first update. This time, I deleted a couple of the voices in the update package, so that I would have enough room to install the updates to the internal memory. "Bam" now everything is working perfectly again. I believe for me...the tomtom was having trouble communicating with the new application that I had previously installed on the sd card. I hope this may help someone.

There are no speaking directions on my TomTom GO720 e.g. for 'turn left' or 'take the next exit' or 'continue for 3 miles'. It only beeps for speed cameras etc. We have ticked all the boxes on the sound...


Hi there

As the TomTom is making beeping sounds, its a good indication that its not a hardware fault, it sounds to me its a software issue.

What you could do is try to reinstall the voices on your device. To do this, follow these steps:-

I presume you have TomTom Home installed already, if not you can download it from
http://www.tomtom.com/home

STEP 1 Make a Backup
  • Connect your TomTom to the computer and switch it on
  • Open TomTom Home
  • Click on 'backup and restore' and make a backup if you haven't done so already
Once the backup has been made, please do the following:-

STEP 2 Remove the existing voice files
  • Open My Computer, you will see the TomTom as two removable drives, one will be the internal memory and one will be for the SD card slot on the device.
  • Click into the Internal memory drive, you should see a whole load of files and folders.
  • You should see a folder called LoquendoTTS or Loquendo, click into this folder and delete the contents (all the files and folders inside the loquendo folder)
  • Go back to the root directory of the TomTom and delete the folder 'Voices'

STEP 3 Download and Reinstall the voices via TomTom Home
  • Go back to TomTom Home
  • Click on Add Maps, traffic and Voices
  • Select Voices. Loacate the voice of Jane and Tim and add them to your device
  • Go back to the main menu of TomTom Home, click on Add Maps, traffic and Voices -> Computer Voices and install the voice of Kate or Simon (UK English computer voices)
  • Close TomTom Home and also Close it from the system tray. (in the bottom right hand corner of your screen down by the computer clock, you should see a red icon for TomTom Home, Right click on it and choose 'exit')
STEP 4 Install the Clear Flash Tool from TomTom
  • Once Home has closed completely, please download and install the clear flash tool from:- http://www.tomtom.com/updates/clear_flash/clear_flash.exe (Home must be completely closed, otherwise it may not install correctly)
  • Accept the license agreement and keep pressing the Next arrow until the clear flash tool has installed.
  • Your device will start flashing to say there is some activity on your device
  • When your device has finished flashing on the screen (might take a minute), use the 'safely remove hardware' feature of your PC to disconnect the TomTom
  • Switch the TomTom off then take it out of the dock.
STEP 5 Test the voices

  • Switch the TomTom back on, but not connected to the dock
  • Let it load up to the main navigation screen
  • Tap onto the menu and tap onto 'Change Preferences -> Voice Preferences'.
  • Select a non-computer voice i.e. Jane or Tim and press test. You should now hear the voice instruction
  • Try selecting the voice of Kate or Simon i.e. the computer voices, and press test, you should now hear the computer voice.
This should get the voices working again, if not it might be worth giving TomTom Support a call and they can talk you through it.

WON'T SPEAK STREET NAMES


Greetings Seecar,
I had the same problem with the TomTom One. What you need to do is this:
When you select a voice preference you have to use a "computer" voice as it seems the "human" voice cannot pronounce the street names. I don't know if your model has the same choices but mine is set to "Samantha, English US"
