Re: the wireless adapter is not listed
Have you turned your wireless adapter on by using the Fn+Function Keytop with the blue icon that looks like a vertical line with two radiating arcs on either side? Try that anyway and you should see an icon or set of icons for activating your wireless and wireless and bluetooth antennas. As these pop up use your keypad arrows or mouse to click on the one you want to activate. You may or may not be prompted to reboot.
And yees, you need to install the wireless adapter drivers for your laptop and probably others like sound and glide pad if the above does not work for you. These devices may work under Windows automatically, but your VAIO probably has better drives that will give you better functionality.
To locate your drivers I need to know the model number itself which is located in one of the areas listed below as indicated by Sony.
For models released Fall 2000 and later
The model name can be found on a small label located in one of the following places: Notebook Computers: (see picture)

If your kids laptops are getting good signal strength then, its the problem with your laptop. You nmay have to upgrade your wireless adapter to N standard. The one which you have might be a b/g standard adapter. Check with your sony to upgrade the wireless adapter.
This could be a few things but I've had a similar problem that turned out to be the wireless card itself failing. It could also be a corrupt driver or manager software for the wireless card. Usually the manager is autoloaded and then it looks for the card and if it doesn;t find it then it will shut down or go into standby mode.
If you could try the card in another computer then that would help to rule out if it is the card.
Next we might try to reinstall the drivers and software for the card. So we want to uninstal it first. Go to settings- control panel - then add remove programs. Find the software for the card and uninstal it. Then reboot at least once (twice doesn't hurt) to make sur eit is cleaned out. Then reinstall the software. This will let us rule out if the drivers are corupted and causing the problem.
Normally you can count on it just being a problem with the card but because it has locked up when the card wasn't in it could be the drivers. There is a possibility of it being a problem with windows (repair or reinstal required to fix) or the motherboard. Usually about 99% of the time this turns out to be the card. A B speed network card is actually pretty slow. You can buy a replacemnt usb G speed for about $20. You can buy a pcmcia (slot card) G or N for about $30. These are a litte easier on the computer so don't slow it or the connection speed down on a older or slower laptop.
well google search the drivers to find out what you need then make shure your fash has enuff memory on it to fit the driver on it then click and drag the driver's program files to the flash and then plug it in to the other pc then open mycomputer then program files then drag and drop driver's files there. Then instal driver (if needed)
terry i agree with you.goto cnet.com and upgrade your drivers.if the network is stable and others can access it your problem lies within your pc.first try to remove then reinstall your adapter,if this doesnt work get the latest drivers.
