SOURCE: wireless driver for acer aspire 3694

The new hardware designed for Windows Vista is not backwardly compatible with XP. Since XP has been phased out by Microsoft the hardware manufacturers are not going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to write code for an operating system the is no longer supported by the manufacturer. If you want to run XP you are going to have to purchase an older laptop. Make sure you have good backups for all the drivers and the XP operating system disk as these drivers and system disks are going to be harder to get with every day that passes. If you are lucky enough that the only driver missing is for your wireless card You will able to get by with a USB Wireless access point, but you will have to deal with it protruding from one of your laptops USB ports. I was sad to see XP go. So many of my customers are trying to cling on to it. It Is a solid work horse of an operating system and Microsoft finally ironed out all the bugs with service pack 3. I'm not sure how far you go back but I have been watching this drama unfold since day 1 when widows first came out. All the real programmers back in the day where saying windows was for Idiots that did not know how to write code. DOS never actually died out it is still the heart of the computer and very powerful but is for the most part a well hidden secrete buried deep in Windows. I look back now and see that people enjoy clicking on a cute Icon and having the computer do exactly what they want it to do instead of typing in 10 lines of cryptic DOS commands to do the same thing. The same exact scenario has played out every time they came out with better equipment and a new operating system. People resist change and do not like having to learn how to do something over again no matter how simple it is or the fact that is exponentially faster and more powerful. I have managed to keep up with it since 1982 by being an early adopter. I buy the newest equipment available every year and run it beyond its limits. I see the position some people are in where they cannot afford to keep up with the pace of advancing technology either financially or mentally and they try to cling on to what they have or know until it is so obsolete it no longer functions usefully. I actually know an old guy that still mows his lawn with a push mower(The kind with no motor). He says he likes the way it cuts and it does not waste gas. Both are true but you do not see many people doing it. I do massive amounts of processing and my time is valuable to me so I run several computers. My main work horse is a Quad core 2.6Ghz with 4Gb of ram and 2 terabyte SATA hard drives for storage and 2 15,000rpm 36.7Gb SCSI Ultra320's for swapping and transcoding data streams. Overall the 4 cores run at approx 10.4Ghz. It runs Vista Ultimate 64. My oldest computer is three years old, It's a Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz with 2 Ghz of ram and 2 500Gb hard drives. Three years ago It was pretty much top of the line with a $400 sound system and a $450 512Mb video card. To transcode an .avi 700MB movie to MP4 VOB files Takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. My Vista Ultimate Quadcore Does the same process in just over 17 minutes. If you do the math it's Around 13 times faster not even factoring in the occasional Failure of the process on the Pentium 4 machine which requires you to start all over. One little hiccup in the power or a dropped bit will cause a failure as it has to run full bore for a 230 minutes flawlessly this happens around 1 out of every ten tries. An amazing feat if you think about it. 3.4 billion 1's and 0's wizzing every second for 230 minutes strait. The new machine has yet to drop a rip. So in the same 230 minutes I can do the same exact job 13 times. Three years ago I could transcode 4 .avi's in an 8 hour day. Today with the new machine I can do 23 in the same 8 hours. What It all comes down to his how much time can you save yourself. That is just 1 common task I used as an example because it is a relatively power intensive task. Even that is going obsolete altogether as dvd's are being phased out and even the newest 50Gb Bluray disks are going to die soon because of the advent of streaming video and video on demand. I do not even use disks anymore. My Bluray player has a USB port that hooks up to the central GigaBit LAN and network attached storage. I can watch any of my 1200+ movies anywhere in the house and anywhere in the world as the house is wired to the internet by 2 16Mb/sec cable modems linked together as a bridged connection. I can watch my movies anywhere in the world there is high speed internet. When I stay in hotels I can pull up any of my movies, music, books or anything I have and stream it to the TV or just watch it right off the laptop or through the VR headset. I don't see an end to this never ending battle all we can do is try to keep up. Computers are evolving at a fairly constant rate of doubling ever 18 months. Here is an interesting link showing the time line of windows since it's arrival in 1984. Seems weird it coincides with George Orwell's book 1884. Anyway, check out the link and good luck. I hope the hackers keep windows XP alive at least for a few more years. Here's the link:

I hope I didn't bore you to death,
George

I can't get the network controller drivers to install correctly. I have installed the drivers for my acer aspire 5742g. The FN+F3 can't activate the wireless as a result

Have you installed the correct driver? The 5742G could be installed with an Atheros or a Broadcom wireless card, and these use different drivers.

You can either visually check which make of card is installed in your laptop, or try both drivers and see if either one works.

The following links will initiate a download:

Atheros:

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Wireless%20LAN/Wireless%20LAN_Atheros_9.0.0.202_W7x86W7x64_A.zip?acerid=634176982033714605&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire 5742G&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

Broadcom:

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Wireless%20LAN/Wireless%20LAN_Broadcom_5.100.249.2_W7x86W7x64_A.zip?acerid=634176982752697291&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire 5742G&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

Failing that, perhaps your wireless card has physically failed in some way and needs replacing.

How do I get the acers drivers installed? I have down loaded all three wireless drivers, and none work.

Drivers for windows Vista are here: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_4720.html
Under Drivers and Utilities, Select and download these drives;
1. Wireless LAN Atheros
2. Wireless LAN Broadcom
3. Wireless LAN Intel
While installing, please start with "Intel" as you follow instruction there after. Restart your Laptop and install Broadcom, Atheros respectively.

Please ensure that VISTA SP1 is installed on your system prior to installing these drivers!
Driver incompatibilities on a system without VISTA SP1 might affect usability.
