Question about Simrad GPS

CP32 MKII GPS & MGL-3 ANTENNA

My position shows that I am in London, England  ---   far from the coast of Maine where I really am!  The C map checks out OK -- the strange position is given with or without the antenna connected.  I think that I need to replace the connecting devices at the antenna. If that dos not work I guess I need to replace the MGL-3?  Can I get one to work with the old set?  Or, am I all wrong  -   and hopefully just need to set it all up again????   Thanks for your help!

Hello,

Yes, you need to set it all up again. I would hazard a guess that the Map Datum is set wrong, you want a NAD which is North American Datum and NAD83 is the most recent. Next set you starting location. For Map Units I use the UTM coord System as it is in meters. You can use Lat/Long which many people find easier to use.Your hand held should be able to let you choose via State and then town. Then you can create detail maps on your computer and its best to remove your mem card and insert it into your card reader and save the map details to the card. You can connect your hand held to the PC via a USB cable, but this may be harder so save the detail maps to depending on your software.

Where I am located I get calls from miners who need to setup their hand held and then learn how to set way points so they can update their mining claims accurately. UTM makes this much more accurate due to it being in metric units.

Worldvet

Most likely the problem is that your device is stuck in a demo mode, you should go into settings and when you see demo turn that option off.

I bought Garmin nuvi 250 in Thailand and it works well. However, I brought it to London and try to use it.. It always show "unable to calculate route: no roads near starting point". Moreover, the screen...

It's possible that it doesn't have a map of England. Press Tools, then press Settings then press Map. Press Map Info. This will show you the maps installed on your satnav and the map selected should have a tick beside it. If there's no map of Europe or UK on it you'll need to buy one. If there's one there but not ticked press on it and it will become selected and should work fine then.
If you need to buy a map you'll need to register the satnav if you haven't already done so.
TO REGISTER
Connect the satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com. Select your country. Click on myGarmin and then on Register Your Garmin Device. Follow the prompts. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them in a safe place as you'll probably need them again to update maps.
TO BUY NEW MAPS.
Log into myGarmin and click on myMaps.
Click on Shop fFor More Maps.
Select the one you want, UK and Ireland or W Europe would do. Follow the prompts.

I recently uploaded a tomtom map to my tomtom 1 series 3. Do I need to remove the map of England before I can get access to the french map?

Since you TomTom only has a 1 gb flash drive you will have to remove the map of England to put the map of France on your TomTom One Third Edition. Make sure you make a backup of your map of England or you will have to purchase a new map of England Do not use TomTom Home to do this simply make a new folder on your desktop. Connect your TomTom to the PC. Next go to "My Computer" and open the drive of your TomTom. After opening the drive of your TomTom copy your map of England and paste it into the new folder you made on your desktop. When you are ready to put the map of England back onto your TomTom just copy and paste the map of France into the new folder and copy and paste the map of England back into your TomTom.

I can send you a powerpoint presentation that explains it in a little more detail. To really learn how to read latitude and longitude you should pick up a copy of “Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.”

The earth is divided into parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, also known as lines of position.

clip_image002.jpg

Latitude is measured north and south of the equator, with the equator represented as 0 degrees, and the poles being represented as 90 degrees North or South. Latitude lines are paralel to the equator. For example, if I was at the equator I would be at 0 degrees. If I traveled exactly 60 nautical miles to the north, I would be at 1 degree North, and if I traveled another 60 miles I would be at 2 degrees north. Your GPS display will preface the Latitude measurement with an “N” for positions North of the equator and an “S” for positions south of the equator.

Longitude measures your position east or west from the Prime Meridian, which is a line represented as 0 degrees that bisects the earth from north to south and passes through Greenwich England. Halfway around the earth at the International Dateline Longitude is 180 degrees. Measuring Longitude is a little more complicated because the lines are not parallel and requires an accurate clock (your GPS) to compare time at your location relative to the time in Greenwich England. Your GPS display will preface the Longitude measurement with a “W” for positions west of Greenwich and an “E” for positions east of Greenwich.

To make more accurate measurements each degree is divided into 60 minutes. Because the lines are parallel, 1 minute of latitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. Each minute can be further divided into 60 seconds. Each second is roughly equivalent to a distance of 100’ Instead of seconds, the default setting on your Garmin breaks the minute down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for meven more precise measurements. Because they are not parallel, lines of Longitude are measured the same way, but the distances vary depending on how far north or south of the equator.

To find out where you are with a GPS, you need a map that shows lines of latitude and longitude on it. The lines will be labeled on the map or along the borders of the map. Most nautical charts show the latitude measurements along the right the left border of the map. Longitude measuremnts will be shown along the top and bottom edges.

How do you get the gps to show depth and markers on the water?

It depends on what model you have. Most chartplotters require a chip with regional chart data. Most Lowrance models use Navionics charts. If you have a chip in the GPS, go to the map screen and press the "menu" key. Somewhere in the map setup menu will be a field where you can specify which chart to display.

For example a Navionics gold chart may cover the entire east coast, but it is broken down into a few sub regions. If you are boating in New England you would select the sub region labeled Northeast. Some of the earlier models didn't name the regions, they used model number for each region such as "XL904G". In that case your best bet is to try each one until you can view the charts in your area. Zoom in to 1/2 mile scale to make sure you can see charts.

If you have done all that and still can't see the chart details, there is also a setting in the map setup menu that allows you to set the level of detail. Make sure it is set to normal, more, or most. If you see a declutter setting on the setup menu, try setting it to off.

Garmin nuvi 250 mapsource

Verify that you have the correct basemap for the country that you are in. There are two maps inside a new Garmin. The basemap which shows all the major highways and mapsource which shows all the street. If you don't have the correct basemap try changing 'Navigation' Advoidance to avoid highways and Toll Roads.
