On the Compaq Presario C700. You need to configure your headphones to be the 'default' audio device. Then you will need to plug in your headphones BEFORE you open up an audio or video file, so that Windows can choose the headphones.
I had the exact same issue with my system until I set my headphones to default and made sure they were plugged in before starting up a audio/video file or an audio/video stream. Now it works fine.
One side note. If you wish to change from headphones to speakers during a clip or stream, it will not work. You will need to terminate the clip or stream and restart it, for the speakers to be able to be activated.
I have compaq presario c700. when i attach headphones, the laptop speakers dont get off. both headphone and speaker are on. the sound should only come from headphones..

kindly check the audio settings
by going into the volume controls by double clicking the speaker icon at the right bottom of the screen none of the lever should be at the bottom drah them all up towards the top.
Also check the balancer just above the levr for increasing the sound make sure that it is in the middle , that maintain the balance of the speakers.
And follow these steps
Double click the speaker icon on the right bottom
click Options on the top menu>>Properties>>And make sure all the boxes are checked
Now again check if there is any box in mute, there should be none.
