Can you please give us more info.. Lots more. Is the o/s on the w/s Linux? Is the o/s on the sever Linux? What kind? Is this a samba mapped drive, from windows? What's the error message? If you have to enter a password & user id, are you sure it's correct? Can anyone else access the server (log in) from your PC or another PC? Is there a 'guest' login, you can use to test? Pls report back... Rgds,

Dear Mr DAVE117
Sorry for the delay and thanks for your quick response.
I had 3 PC of the same config.
# One of them I had installed as server and other two as work station.
# ping from server to client was working and vice versa
# when I tried to access the server from client, the message says
NFS timed out and failed
# I tried to access the server from my laptop ( compaq presario 2100 old laptopp 2003 model which I config as a client for this server), I was able to get the server files in the laptop. But the problem I now faced was when a program was run which uses socket connection to server, the mesage came out was: connection timed out
# I checked all command and again re connected the previous client1 from the PC. the same error message NFS Timed out flashed.
# I tried to install latest MANDRIVA in the client and tried but the erro message was again NFS timed out.
# /etc/exports in server was rechecked and found to be ok
# I als tried to restart nfs from service and found to restarted succefully but then the same NFS Timed out message in client PC
#/etc/fstab command in client was also rechecked and found to be normal
Hope these information will help to thro some more light on the above problem
regards
sundarmani

Check to make sure all of your paths in the mount command are right. I had this issue a week ago and after putzing with it for a few days I noticed I was trying to mount a non-existent share. Fixed my ***** command and it worked right away. Other things to look at: Check your /etc/exports on the server and make sure the shares are in there. Also make sure that they are active by restarting nfs (/etc/init.d/nfsd restart (may be different now, that worked years ago)). Last, double check your mount command on the client. Make sure the share exists and the server is pingable. If this doesn't help, you may want to try searching on some linux specific forums. linuxquestions.org is good, or if you have ubuntu, ubuntuforums.com.

Compaq screen comes on, then goes to black screen with "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" I don't have a sytem disk, where can I get one?

This would depend on which OS you are trying to install. Also, if the system booted before and you are receiving this message you probably have a bad hard drive or corrupted system files. There are free operating systems out there such as Unix and Linux, or you can go through Microsoft and get the OEM disc for your preferred operating system. If you do not want to puchase the OEM disc yourself then you can also go through a pc repair shop and have them do an OS reinstall. Hope this helps, let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

DHCP Server configuration in Linux

Linux is a UNIX based operating system. It is a server operating system. REDHAT Linux is Enterprise version of Linux. Now a day's Most of corporate sectors use red hat Linux as server in their company because it is secure very much.

Full form of DHCP "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP server assigns IP addresses and other network configuration information like subnet mask, broadcast address, etc to computers on a network. The DHCP assignments are the following.

Lease Request: Client broadcasts their request to DHCP server with a source address of 0.0.0.0 and a destination address of 255.255.255.255.
IP lease offer: DHCP server replies with an IP address, subnet mask, network gateway, name of the domain, name servers, duration of the lease and the IP address of the DHCP server.

Lease Selection: Client receives offer and broadcasts to al DHCP servers that will accept given offer so that other DHCP server need not make an offer.

The DHCP server then sends an ack to the client. The client is configured to use TCP/IP. Lease Renewal: When half of the lease time has expired, the client will issue a new request to the DHCP server.

Installation of DHCP server: First of all while install the RedHat Linux enterprise version server be careful about the ports and the services must be turned on. To create DHCP server in Linux first download DHCP RPM package and install with "rpm-ivh" command. Where I have done it there I have create YUM server, so easily I have download and install it by YUM (yum install dhcp version). DHCP package will locate in /usr/share/doc/at Linux file system. I copied the DHCP's files from /usr/share/doc/ to /etc/dhcpd.conf.. Then I started to configure the dhcpd.conf file to route the DHCP server in there local network. I have open the configuration file with "vi" command. Then commented out the lines from "default gateway to option netbios" because system don't read the commented lines. After that I set the range of IP address in dynamic- bootp of their local assumption of system. I have change the "next-server" with the dhcp server name and have also change the fixed address with the dhcp server IP address (end range of dynamic IP). It is very easy job to configure DHCP server. After configure the .conf file of dhcp just turn on the service with "chkconfig" command and restart the dhcp service. After that entire job I reboot the system. And after rebooting of server I turned on the other client system. While startup the client system without static IP address all of those picked up IP from dhcp server and going on successfully. I have prefer the command line mode to do the total job.
The DHCP server configure file is following:

ddns-update-style interim
ignore client-updates

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
# The range of IP addresses the server
# will issue to DHCP enabled PC clients

option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;

# Set the DNS server to be used by the
# DHCP clients

# you need to include the following option in the dhcpd.conf file:

option netbios-name-servers 192.168.1.100;

# You can also assign specific IP addresses based on the clients'
# ethernet MAC address as follows (Host's name is "laser-printer":

accessing emails on email server through HAMACHI VPN

INSTALL HAMACHI ON BOTH THE SERVER AND THE REMOTE CLIENT . THEN JOIN THEM ON TO THE SAME NETWORK, FOR FURTHER NOTES ON HAMACHI HOWTO GO TO : HAMACHI HOW-TO

CONNECT THE TWO AND PING EACH OTHER BOTH WAYS, THEN TRY TO ACCESS THE FILE SHARES ON THE SERVER TO MAKE SURE THE CONNECTION IS REAL AND LIVE.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THE USER ID FOR THE EMAIL ADDRESS YOU ARE GOING TO DOWNLOAD AS WELL AS THE PASSWORD.....
CONFIGURE YOUR EMAIL CLIENT....

938dd6a.jpg

IN THE INCOMING AND THE OUTGOING SERVERS OF THE EMAIL CLIENT YOU HAVE TO PUT THE NETWORK NAME THAT WAS GIVEN ON THE EMAIL SERVER TO THE HAMACHI CLIENT.

NEXT IS TO ADD THAT NAME AND THE HAMACHI IP ADDRESS IN THE HOSTS FILE SO THAT THE DNS IS RESOLVED CORRECTLY.....

ONCE THAT IS DONE THE REST IS AS WE DO IT ON THE LOCAL AREA CONNECTION WALLAAAA!!!

WE HAVE THE EMAILS DOWNLOADING.......

Hi,

Did you try uninstalling the AVG?Next you can also try a system restore but make sure you take a backup of all your important data.Bcuz once you do a system restore then you'll loose all your data as it will be restored to an earlier time.

Goodluck..

Installed secondary sata hard drive. systems recognizes drive but cannot gain access. tried adv sharing settings as administrator but keep getting access denied. tried to reformat but permission denied....

Is the drive at the correct level i.e. FAT32, NTFS in the case of windows, ext2, ext3, ext4 and others for linux. depends on what OS was used previously on this drive. Try to use an OS that supports the drives file system, but since you mention formatting try accessing the drive in the bios and perform a low level format. If it is connected to a raid controller settings in the raid controller will need to be made (normally on servers).

Can not receive my e-mail

You will need to check your email settings in your email client on your PC. In Outlook Express, under "tools" ->'accounts, choose your mail and select the "Properties" button. Check that your POP3 Server is set to the POP3 server of your Internet Provider. eg mail.yourisp.com. The port is 110. Make sure your user name and password are both correct. The mail server will (when set corectly) access its mail server and deliver your email. Of course you must already be connected to the Internet.

My E-Mail Server is down

the solution i will be posting assumes you already have postfix installed in the new machine and that your new postfix server is able to relay mails. Old configurations has been copied/transported to the new server ( and the only remaining task is to move all the mails to the new postfix server.

copy /home (your maildir) to your new server - check your postfix configuration to verify your maildir

also make sure you have copied

/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow
/etc/group
/etc/gshadow
/var/spool/mail

to your new mail server ( these are your mail related files)

Note: This is assuming you have identical setup you have with your old email server. double check your postfix configuaration before proceeding.

Good Luck

Ten computers are connected in the server.... when the client tries to log on his computer it takes 30 min to log on.what will be the problem?

Wow,... how long is a piece of string. Could be dns or wins not setup correctly, could be group policies applying, could be the network switch has a fault or the cabling that hooks them up. Is it only 1 computer, or all 10? What is the server. Windows 2000 server, 2003, Linux, ?? Tell us more about the network setup.
