No manual. The settings seem to work or at least you can step through them. It has three buttons SET MODE and FLASH that have no explaination of what they do. set seems to do nothing. Once the film is placed in the camera, it advances to 1 exp and the shutter does not work although it works during dry firing. It advances film, the lens cover works and the zoom works, Just no shutter. Open the back and when you close it the film advances again but the shutter will not fire. Is this an easy repair or a hopeless one.

That's because it's not a button. It's the ring around the shutter release button. There's a little grip at the front of the ring. Push it one way to zoom out, the other way to zoom in. See the illustration on page 13 of the manual.
The flash may be set on "Suppressed" - meaning there will be no flash. On the back, by your right thumb, there is a round button. It's the ring around the MENU button. On the right of this you'll see a symbol which looks like a lightning bolt - (Flash). Turn on the power. Push down on the right side of this ring type button, towards the lightning bolt. Everytime you push, it sets the flash for a different mode. Try changing the flash mode and see if it doesn't fix your issue.
The camera requires you to set your lens aperture at the minimum setting, usually orange coloured. I.E. f22 f32. Nikons control the aperture through the camera, not setting the ring manually like old style SLR's
