Securing a wireless connection

posted by GuyMan1 on May 26, 2008

Hi,

having recently moved, my wireless router - conected to virgin media - automatically picked up its own internet connection under the title of the Belkin router itself. I cannot secure this connection and cannot access the Belkin site at 192.168.2.1. to encrypt it.

So basically, wireless connection working, but unable to secure it.

Please help!!

Plug directly into the wireless access point using a network cable and then navigate to the default IP address for configuration. Don't try to access it wirelessly.

To add to previous comments, when connected to the router (hardwired connection), go to your start menu, run, and the type in 'cmd' (no quotes). This will open a command window. In the window type 'ipconfig'. This will give you your ip address, as well as the gateway. The gateway is the address of the router. By typing this address into your browser, you should be able to access the router configuration menus (might have password if you had previously set 1, or the default (you can check with the manuf website to learn the default). Then it's just a matter of setting either your wep key, or setting wpa or any other means of security you want to implement.

To secure your wireless connection, do you mean by
1. Encryption using WEP or WAP
2. MAC address filtering on your wireless card
3. Disabling SSID broadcast.
If so you need to configure your wireless settings using Internet Explorer, the URL would be http://192.168.2.1 (check the config. TCP/IP address in your manual)
