This problem is common now a days and its related to a memory card issue. Do the following :

1. If it is new, format it and try again, there should not be any problem taking pictures
2. Old memory card then might be a Bad sector in memory card. At this point of unidentified image your memory card will not write any images or movie in it. This problem is mostly with the china made memory cards. So if you can try a different card that will be good so we can see if that card is already bad pr not.

If you haven't format the card yet what I need you to do is to get first all the data from the card by connecting it to your computer using a card reader and then save all data to your computer and then format the card afterward.

You can use a data recovery software called RECUVA, you can get it from download.com. Then once you download and install that software to your computer connect the card to the computer and via card reader and then use RECUVA to recover the data from it.

Yes RECUVA is free software and I use that personally, just get it from download.com.

This message appears when the camera can not read the image (picture) from the card ..cause it is either in other format ..like Gif or so ...or it was damaged ..or was took in another camera ..and the size or the format or the resolution ..do not match any of the values of the pictures the camera is capable to take..
If the message appears for all pictures on the car d..than the card was either damaged or infected..and I suggest to insert it on a computer card reader ..save the pictures..insert the card again in the camera ..go to main menu ...Storage feature..memory card .and on the options just format it again ..

note which ones are by the name ..the ones that makes problem ..insert the card into a card reader on a laptop ..and delete them by name ..
or ..even if the picture do not appear when you try to see it one by one...press options and delete ..In the view mode the option is on the center button instead of menu ..I think ..you will find it ..cause if you have a picture displayed and you hit the option button will display the features to be selected...delete ...move ...and so on ..and delete them one by one if they are not functional anymore..

You have to download them into the computer ...and see if in there can do anything ..or ..to insert the card into the card reader and use a recovery program ...and see if it work ...anyway the computer may see the bad pictures like they are ..the camera ...otherwise..is much sensitive on this matters..
The best you can do ..in my opinion, is to save all pistures into computer for not to loose them ..and format the card ..cause if it made issues with some of the pictures it means that it has something wrong on the memory units ..and formatting will solve the card issues..After that you can always copy the pictures back to the card if you need them there ..but I dont see the point ...The general Idea is to make pictures and save them for to use....

I meant that into the camera ...unless the camera has a repair picture feature..you can not recover them ...

Same problem here on a Power Shot A3150 IS with a 8GB micro SD.
All worked well, then bom, only unidentified images. But the camera doesn't tell you unless you review the images...
Tried 5 recovery softwares dso far, some recover the images into a bmp, which then also says unidentified image... Even the camera can't read them.
And if I take a movie, I get an ASCII chaos in the folder the images are recorded in. No solution so far.

Using the Ixus 95IS I now get Unidentified Image - this is useless how can I rectify

This happens when your SD card is nearly full. Backup all the images on the card to your computer hard-drive, and then format it. That should help with the 'unidentified image' messages. You might also want to think about getting an SD card with a larger capacity, at least 4GB.

Unidentified Image

When a camera records a picture certain information is written in the image file. When you see it in another camera, the second camera reads the stored information and may be able to display the name the date and so on depending on the information stored.
However if someone sent you pictures attached to an e-mail message, they are often compressed and the information about the images may not be available. So, not fin ding the name of the image, the camera says unidentified image.

If you want you can rename them, but you will not be able to restore the meta information that was stripped off the image when it was sent by e-mail. Identified, or not the images are still viewable.

Try using a card reader to download your pics. Also, go to a store like Walmart that has a Kodak picture maker machine. You should be able to see all of your pics and print them or even make a cd of them.

You think you can try photo recovery software to see if you can rescue the lost photos or movies, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures and videos are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Unidentified Image

Usually the only time this message will appear is when you have taken the picture with another camera and try to review it on another. If this is not the issue, try formatting your card. Try another card. It may be a faulty memory card. If none of this works, call Canon tech support for free support.

I have the same problem with my Canon Powershot SX110IS. images dissapear with the notation "unidentified image". I brought my camera in to a local camera shop, and they were able to save the lost images. They told me I had an inexpensive, low quality memory card that is causing this problem. I upgraded to a high quality one and haven't had the problem since.
