HP dv6835tx Notebook with Visa Ultimate 64-bit will not shut down

Hello,

I have a brand new HP dv6835tx laptop running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. When I choose Shut Down it does not shut down completely. The blue lights above the function keys stay lit and I can hear the fan still running. I am definitely choosing Shutdown (not Sleep or Hibernate etc). Windows tells me it is "Shutting Down", the screens goes black, the hard drive stops spinning but the lights remain lit. If I press the power button nothing happens. If I hold down the power button for 3-4 seconds the blue lights will go off. Then when I start up it sometimes tells me "Windows did not shut down correctly" where I can choose to start in safe mode etc.

I have just restored to the factory settings which is a process where you insert 3 DVD's and it totally clears the HDD and restores the image of how it arrived.

The problem still exists. This means that the fault is not caused by me playing around with settings or any software that I have installed. The problem is with the base installation of the machine.

Please help as I am going mad trying to get this laptop to shut down correctly to avoid killing my battery.

Thank you in advance.

David.

No luck I am afraid. Time to go back to the HP help desk.

From what you've described, it sounds like you are clicking the Standby button, instead of the actual shutdown option. On the Start button, you will see (from left to right); Left: Start Search Middle: Standby Middle: Lock Right: Arrow Clicking the arrow will show you the Shutdown menu option; http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/shutdown.jpg

In that case, check your Power Management settings.

Click Start > Run and type: powercfg.cpl

    1. Scroll down to "Power buttons and lid"
    2. Expand Start menu power button
    3. Change the function from "Sleep" to "Shut down"
    4. Click Apply

Go to the HP Support site on the web and get yourself to the 'Drivers and Downloads" main page. Type in the p/n (product number) in the provided box and click go/arrow...whatever. When you're at your laptop's entry page for drivers, enter Vista as your operating system. If you're running 64 Bit W7 enter Vista 64. Almost all Vista Drivers work with W7. Look through the list of drivers until you find webcam/camera software/driver link. Download by SAVING to your desktop. Do not run the driver install from the HP/Compaq site. Double click the driver app icon on your desktop and follow the prompts. That should have you squared away.

ASUS M51SN Matshita BD UJ-120 burner does not work - Windows 7

You need to install windows 7 (32 bit) not 64. To change to 64 you have to make internal changes and updates to your notebook. Your notebook is set up for 32 bit systems.

Upgrade vista home premium

As per my knowledge, there is no version of Vista called Vista Professional like in Windows XP.
Make sure what is the version to which you want to upgrade to from Vista Home Premium to Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.
The available versions of Vista Operating Systems along with the features supported from the Link below :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

However, if you want to Upgrade the current version of Vista to a higher version like Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, you need to purchase Vista Anytime Upgrade kit from any retail store or directly from Microsoft.
You can find the required information related to Anytime Upgrade Kit from the link below :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/anytime-upgrade-overview.aspx

However, make sure that you had created the Recovery Disks for your notebook using which you will be able to reinstall the preinstalled Operating Sytem along with all the Preinstalled Applications and Drivers after which you need to use the Vista Upgrade Kit to upgrade to higher version of Vista.
However, if you are currently having a 32 Bit Vista preinstalled in the Notebook, it is not possible to upgrade to a 64 Bit Vista since you can upgrade only a 32 Bit of Operating System to a higher version of 32 Bit Operating System and a 64 Bit Operating System to a higher version of 64 Bit Operating System.
Hope this helps....

32 BIT OR 64 BIT?

I beta tested Vista 64 bit, and had very little problems running 'most' software I had.

Without knowing the specific software you will be trying to use, it's hard to tell. Most software manufacturers DO offer their stuff in 64 bit, but it's often NOT included on the installation disks.

For the average user, I would stick with 32 bit, only because some programs won't work under 64 bit, unless it states 64 Bit compatibility right on the software box.
