How many teeth can the timing be off on a 4.6 engine before damaging valves-pistons? Thought we were taking precautions to not allow chain to jump After changing the tension components it now sounds like a 7.6 diesel.

Urgently change the chain, it will cause wreckage in the engine!

Do not crank it, it will cause the engine cycle rotation and damage it.

What does the car do when the timing belt goes out


The 2001 Cavalier does not have a timing belt....it has a chain. That being said, the tensioner for the timing chain is a common failure item. If the tensioner fails while the car is at speed, the timing chain will jump across the crankshaft teeth, putting the crankshaft and camshaft out of synchronization. This will cause the car to immediately shutdown, the pistons in the engine will come up and hit and bend the valves, resulting in internal damage to the engine.

General Information

Interference Engines
Engines, chain- or belt-driven, can be classified as either free-running or interference, depending on what would happen if the piston-to-valve timing is disrupted. A free-running engine is designed with enough clearance between the pistons and valves to allow the crankshaft to rotate (pistons still moving) while the camshaft stays in one position (several valves fully open). If this condition occurs normally, no internal engine damage will result. In an interference engine, there is not enough clearance between the pistons and valves to allow the crankshaft to turn without the camshaft being in time.
An interference engine can suffer extensive internal damage if a timing belt fails. The piston design does not allow clearance for the valve to be fully open and the piston to be at the top of its stroke. If the belt fails, the piston will collide with the valve and will bend or break the valve, damage the piston, and/or bend a connecting rod. When this type of failure occurs, the engine will need to be replaced or disassembled for further internal inspection; either choice costing many times that of replacing the timing belt.


Inspection


NOTE For manufacturer-s recommended service interval, refer to the maintenance interval chart located in this manual.
The average replacement interval for a timing belt is approximately 60,000 miles (96,000 km). If, however, the timing belt is inspected earlier or more frequently than suggested, and shows signs of wear or defects, the belt should be replaced at that time.

WARNING Never allow antifreeze, oil or solvents to come into with a timing belt. If this occurs immediately wash the solution from the timing belt. Also, never excessive bend or twist the timing belt; this can damage the belt so that its lifetime is severely shortened.

Inspect both sides of the timing belt. Replace the belt with a new one if any of the following conditions exist:


Hardening of the rubber-back side is glossy without resilience and leaves no indentation when pressed with a fingernail Cracks on the rubber backing Cracks or peeling of the canvas backing Cracks on rib root Cracks on belt sides Missing teeth or chunks of teeth Abnormal wear of belt sides-the sides are normal if they are sharp, as if cut by a knife.

If none of these conditions exist, the belt does not need replacement unless it is at the recommended interval. The belt MUST be replaced at the recommended interval.

WARNING On interference engines, it is very important to replace the timing belt at the recommended intervals, otherwise expensive engine damage will likely result if the belt fails.

When the timing chain breaks does it usually damage anything else or will replacing the timing chain and gears take care of the problem?


When the timing chain breaks the cam quits turning. Any valves that are open, remain open.
If the motor is turned over trying to start it or bump starting it in gear, the pistons come up and
hit the open valves. Bent valves are common. If it is a 4 cylinder only a couple valves will be open
at a time so you may damage 2 or 4 (there are usually 2 per cylinder so a 4 cylinder has 8).
You could replace the chain, make sure the timing marks align with eahother and the chain but
just getting the cam and crankshaft to alignment could cause some damage. Good luck. I did
it to mine once. Bent 4 of the 8 and had to pull the head, sent to the machine shop and reassemble.
I tried to bump start mine down a 2 mile hill. Ohh well! It's fixable.

AT WHAT MILEAGE SHOULD A TIMING CHAIN BE REPLACED IN A 2001 FORD ESCAPE?


There is no specified mileage. Timing chains last a lot longer than timing belts and the rate at which they wear can depend more on the frequency of oil changes and engine use or abuse. The general rule of thumb most shops go by now; if it's getting noisy, then it's time to pull the timing cover. Often times it's not the chain itself, but the chain guides that have failed. Either way, a timing chain job will involve new guides, tensioner, and chain. It's an expensive job, no need to rush into it unless you know you have something coming apart and noise is your first indicator.

Are the V6 engines Free spinning?


Hi Lukegerny,
No,the V6 engine is not free spinning. If the timing chain breaks, leaving the valves open as the piston moves through its travel,there will be damage to the valves.How much damage will depend on speed of engine and length of time it ran. You can perform a leak down test to check the condition of the pistons and valves. It will tell you if the valves are not sealing,without having to take it apart. Thanks,Chuck.

you should be ok.. i have never seen valve damage on one of these engines after belt breaking..just retime everything and install a new belt..make sure you check water pump and tensioner bearing for looseness/wear

Lotsof knocking no power


If the cam chain jumped then the tensioner is not tight. Timing is way off and valve hit piston. Need to **** case and replace tensioner, dry time then install new piston and pull vales to see if they are bent.
