Question about Gateway Solo 5300 Notebook
It is plugged in, but the green light keeps going off and the pop up appears "switch to a power cord."
if I jiggle the power cord, sometimes i can get the green light to stay on, but for only about 5 minutes, then it starts blinking again and eventually disappears.
could there be a problem with the part that plugs in to the laptop?
The jack or AC power pin can be fixed yourself if you're up to it. The part is usually under $10. I've done three (2 Fujitsu' and a Sony. Take your time when you take it apart and take pictures of the disassembly. They will com in very handy when you start to put it all back together again. When you get it fixed invest in a proper cable retention device so the AC power pin doesn't get damaged again. This short Chris Pirillo Video talks about CRDs on laptops.

It sounds like you've either got a faulty power supply, or a fault power jack (the jack is what your power supply actually plugs into on your laptop and is prone to coming loose). Usually you'll be looking at around £100 for a new jack, and depending on where you get it, anywhere from £50 for a new power supply.
