Question about Toshiba Satellite A215-S7407 Notebook

1 Answer

Hello, I got Toshiba satellite_A215-S7413. All I got to see is its battery consumption is really heavy. This ages battery earlier. The culprits are 1) Processor 2) Wireless Card 3) CCFL Backlite. I Working on processor means making bios upgrade for processor. then finding low power equivalent for existing. The processor needs to match even the existing connector slot. Wireless card: for the moment very little can be done about this too. So I concentrated on Backlite which consumes nearly 11-12W ( I have seen some lappis need only 14W for complete function).I am thinking of replacing CCFL with LED and design the necessary control circuit for this. But my current obstacle is I dont know the protocol of communication with inverter card for brightness control and Pin configuration on inverter connector. Is anybody here aware where will I find it?

Owing to age of laptop, I would not try the change over to LED, unless you have a compatible graphics lead/connection.
You can upgrade to 2x2gb ram (4gb total)
You could try a small wireless dongle like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Wireless-USB-Adapters/300Mbps-802-11b-wireless-adapter-internal-antenna-support/B01HZRNFT8/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1489520798&sr=8-16&keywords=wireless+dongles+for+laptops
Batteries on these older laptops would be good for up to two hours when new- so I don't think you will do much better unless you can find an upgraded battery like this 9 cell battery, instead of the usual 6-cell one
https://www.nextdaypower.com/Toshiba-Satellite-A215-S7413-9-Cell-High-Capacity-Battery.htm
As for the processor, again, the motherboard determines what can be done, and from what I can tell, it will make little difference , even if you could find one.

SOURCE: Toshiba Tecra 8100 will not boot, even the toshiba boot screen not displayed

http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=BIOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

Thats a link to info about bios updates on the tosh website. If you're not getting to the toshiba screen then POST has not completed which means that either there's a hardware problem or the bios is corupt. If you're sure the RAM is ok try flashing the Bios.

Problem is though, to make the bios update disc, you need a working computer.

and, err, It'll probably have to be a toshiba!
(sorry, not my fault!)

SOURCE: Toshiba satellite A215-S5815 WLAN issues with Win.XP SP2

They don't list an XP driver for your model. Based on diljale's comments, though, I was able to discover that Atheros uses a single driver for all of its models, and he says you've got an Atheros card.

The direct download link, which may even work, is here:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/driver_wifi_atheros_27763A.exe

If that does not work, go here:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?origin=new&ct=DL

Pick operating system XP
Pick All Categories, and scroll down to Wi-Fi (It may be so far down the list it won't show on your screen).
Find the first/latest Atheros Wi-Fi driver and you should be in business.

You may also wish to consider visiting http://www.radarsync.com and downloading the free software there, which attempts to tell you which drivers are out of date and tries to offer download links to the newest versions. RadarSync has many many flaws, but it can sometimes be helpful.

My toshiba laptop is askingn for a password to turn on. I know this relates to the cmos battery. I have the toshiba satellite A215-S7413, how to i get to the cmos battery?

How to get to the CMOS battery

The Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 Notebook PC's CMOS battery, is soldered to a bracket on the bottom of the motherboard.
The laptop has to be completely disassembled to access it.

In this photo showing the bottom of the motherboard, the CMOS battery is in the middle,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a205/big/toshiba-satellite-a200-a205-21.jpg

This is a link to a free Service Manual, detailing disassembly,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-toshiba

Go to the 11th line down. The one that starts with Satellite A10
Go across and click on A215

This is a PDF file. It may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page, and additional time to fully download.
Suggest you let the file download all the way before looking through it.

1) Remove ALL power to the laptop. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery

2) Observe Anti-Static Precautions
Suggest you bu and wear an ESD wrist strap, and connect the alligator clip to a good ground source.
Average price is around $3 to $6.

3) Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.
Mark each compartment for the area the screws come out of.
There may be as many as 60 screws and 12 different types.
Do Not mix them up.

(You can use a clean egg carton in a pinch. Mark each egg holder)

Boot passward issue with Toshiba Satellite A215-S7413

The BIOS password is removed by the BIOS configuration, you need the BIOS password to get into the BIOS configuration. But if you do not have the BIOS password then you need to construct this dongle device.
TOSHIBA BIOS PASSWORD DONGLE
You can build a dongle that plugs into the printer port.Purchase a 25 pin male D sub connector and solder insulated wires to the various pins as listed below. The pins are numbered on the connector
http://www.tilman.de/sonstiges/toshiba/dongle1.jpg this is a picture of the finished dongle

Wire the pins as follows :-1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15
Plug the finished dongle in the printer port and power up the laptop. The password will be reset, go into the BIOS configuration to check the BIOS password, you may have to disable the BIOS password.

Hope it helps.

My Toshiba Satellite A215-S7413 laptop randomly goes to a blue screen with lots of white writing on it. I never have time to read it because it goes away so quickly. After the screen goes away it restarts...

Try going to Start - Run.
Type sfc /scannow in the run line and hit enter or click ok.
A dialog will pop up that says "Windows File Protection"
Allow this to run and insert the Win XP CD if requested.
Hopefully this will resolve your issue!
