Link modem to router but keep getting warning that network cable is disconnected.

Hope the modem is and ADSL or any other Internet modem.
Plug the modem ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router. Go into the router and configure PPoE with username and password. Set up a LAN connection to the router on your computer. Make sure that your firewall is not blocking the router internet connection.
If the port is not lighting up, it may be a dead port.
You have to check the ip addresses. I thinks that might be the problem. You can check using Start_>RUN->cmd and hit enter. The type ipconfig /all. Check the ip address settings. If they are in different subnets, you have to configure it. I think your router assigns dhcp addresses. Modem is assigned an ip address from the Internet Service Provider. What you have to do is get a browser and go type the router address. Then authenticate yourself and change wan settings. Configure everything there to use the modem as a part of the router. (ISP information should be provided there).
Then make sure that your router doesn't assign a dhcp addres to the modem.
Try to configure and check. Hope this would help you. :) tc

The best thing to do is to purchase a router so that you could share the internet connection on both systems.

No internet connection

This should be connected as so. From wall outlet to DSL modem, from DSL modem to D-Link router, From D-Link router to Laptop via wireless or wired connection. You will still need the DSL modem installed but the wire coming from the DSL modem will go to uplink port on the router instead of into the laptop.

Downloads locks up - Belkin N1 Wireless Router

I had the same problem. My Belkin N1 Router was constantly dropping the WiFi connection (every few minutes). I tried several solutions I found on different forums:
Change the channel selection from Auto to a specific channel -- I tried all 13 channels, but no improvement.

Update the firmware to the latest (Beta) version -- still no improvement.

Finally I enabled "Protected Mode" and the connection seems fine now. Hope this helps, and good luck!
