Re: No DISPLAY ON THE SCREEN
If the external display works fine then the most common fault is the Inverter board for the LCD. By having the external display function properly, the video signal from the video graphics card is working.
The other fault could be, but generally isn't, the TAB welds on the LCD. Usually when these go a portion of the display will be lost first or discoloration e.g. red/white/or black stripe appears.
I generally don't include the CCFL (Cold Cathode Florescent Lamps) as a fault as the inverter is what supplies the voltage to the lamps.

This is related to heat problem, resulting of bad manufacture of the motherboard. It hapens with some model of motherboard. I\'ve fixed some. You have to open the laptop case and find the GPU and CPU chips (See the manual or google for the manual of you board to locate them). Then see were the thermall mass is and wipe ip clean and replace it with fresh one. Clean the fans of all dust and mount everything again. That should do it.
Backlight or the inventer is gone, check www.pchub.com for parts. I got one of these laptops for around 20usd, it may not be worth the repair. You can also use a external display, the laptop has a VGA - for a desktop display connector and a tv connector aswell.
VGA- blue connector 3 lines of pins on the back. TV connector, yellow, round connector on the right side.
It sounds like the inverter on your LCD screen is going bad on you. You can sometimes find inverters for cheap on eBay, but you will need to get the part number from Compaq to be sure that you are buying the correct thing, and I usually say not to buy any that ship from Asia even though they may be cheaper, as many times they are knock offs.
Good day David! Can you tell me a little about why you can not get to the information? (Damage, password problem, etc) Ron- And a good day to you too, teacherep! Ugg! Sounds like you have a nasty one there! If it was running XP (or similar) before, then the amount of memory probably should not be an issue. Can't say why you only got a partial install, but sounds like that's what happened. If you have some recovery disks for the originally installed OS, I'd try to reinstall that. Have you tried to bring it up in safe mode to see what happens? Or, can't you get that far? Do you have anything at all showing up on the display, even flickers or flashes? Ron-
I'd reseat the memory first. If there are two pieces, take first one, then the other alone in the system. Possibly bad memory. If that's not it, the lcd cable could be unplugged. Try connecting to an external monitor. If that works, it's the lcd somewhere.
