Look in your control panel. Go through the sound test.

Will Harman Kardon HK 206 speakers work with Windows 8

I just purchased a Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8 and decided to keep using my old Harmon Kardon HK 206 speakers because I'm quite satisfied with these speakers. When I hooked them to my new PC, Windows 8 recognized them right away. The speakers work great on my new PC. Try going to the Control Panel and see if your speakers were recognized. (On my PC they're referred to as "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio). That's due to the default drivers in Windows 8. As long as you see speakers in the control panel, you should be OK. In that case you should check your connections. If you don't see speakers in the control panel, go back one screen and select add a device and let Windows 8 scan for any device that it hadn't recognized before.

Why doesn't my computer reconize my speakers

You need to download and install the drivers for your audio, it's not that the speakers aren't recognized, it's the sound card, or on-board audio, whichever you have, that's not being recognized.

Labte pulse 285 speakers!

You won't find drivers for these Labtec speakers because they don't exist. They are plug-and-play speakers so they should work as soon as you plug them into your computer. But I have the same problem as you do (I had to format my comp as well and now I'm screwed because the speakers aren't recognized by the computer).

Firewave not recognized

The solution I found which seems to work is to go into Activity Monitor, and quit "coreaudiod". This forces it to restart and rescan for audio stuffs which makes it work.

Speakers not recognized by computer after moving

Try the speakers in another computer, to see if the speakers work, at all.

Make sure that the "audio" cable is connected to the GREEN "line-out" socket on your computer's audio-output. Not PINK, and not BLUE.
