In that case the mechanism is defective. This cannot be repaired, you will have to replace it. Luckily it's just a standard pc unit, easy and cheap to replace.

Grinding sounds

The case screws can come loose and grind on the planetary. To see if that's the problem you need to pop the chrome drip ring off that covers part of the planetary. It's just a push fit, pop off with screwdriver tapped with a hammer.

Grinding noise when step on the break.

Hi,

The grinding noise could be indicative that the brake pads have worn off and the metal backing is grinding with the brake disc. This is further supported by the emergency brake light indicator which would illuminate (even when emergency/park brake is not engaged) when the brake fluid is low or the pads are too thin or gone (as in your probable case). Even though the grinding sound is only on the left side, it would be to your advantage to repalce both sides. Additionally, pls have the disc themselves checked as they may need re-surfacing.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

could be wheel bearing universal joint or simply a load of dirt or rust around the brake disc. I would think its a wheel bearing though

If your machine is recent it is a v3 which comes with an adhustable over pressure valve. It is possible to test the pressure (without the expense of a gauge) be using the balnking disc and measuring flow with a measuring jug (or scales) and a watch. check the make of pump and google for it - the Rancilio site also has the data flow rates for the pumps used. If you get the correct flow rate - the machine is fine and it comes down to grind and tamp... the stuff of alt.coffee and countless forums. the reason it makes the "grinding" noise is because the motor that moves the lens to read the disk is dieing, this generally happens when you have played your ps2 for a long time, this only happens to older consoles.
