Place the lens on the palm of your hand and tap to see if any dirt comes off.Use a pressure air to blow into the gaps to see if the jam can be released off. If not your will need to open to clean and release.

This problem is not caused by dirt. The ring has about 0.5 mm of free play, and then hard mechanical stop (resistance). The problem happened all of the sudden, not by getting worse over time. Seems like something got loose and blocks ring movement.
    Thanks, Mark.

Did you ever fix this problem? I am experiencing this with a canon zoom.

My camera can't focus when i press halfway down to focus before i press all the way down to snap the photo. it is only a problem with my 18-55mm lens. all my other lenses focus and take photos...

First off, try gently turning the focus ring on your lens while it is on auto focus mode (DO NOT force it). Sometimes a minor bump on the lens can cause the focus ring to come off the tracks. Try that and see if the lens start auto focusing again. I find that this solves the issues a lot of the time. If that doesn't give you any results then you'll need to take your lens to an authorized Canon service center for repairs. Hope this helps!

Canon E18 error shows when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend.
  • This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed due sand, dust, may be due to external shock caused by dropping the device. try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun around lens barrel. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on this will solve the problem.
  • You can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
  • You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
If motor is running but lens won't retract sometimes lens would slip off with the gear or break off a tooth in the gear when it gets dropped. Try to gently move the lens barrel around with the finger and see if it is moving, but if tooth or gear is broken lens will move once or twice then it will stuck again.

Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.

Hi, I have a Sigma 70-200mm HSM lens with the focus ring stuck to infinity, I'm into repair and I'm pretty used to teardown lens (most manual but also a couple of AF ) , but this is the first time that...

mmmh... sounds like you on your own here. I found this page whilst looking for a solution to a stuck manual focus ring on my own 70-200mm sigma. The focus ring does not move beyond a millimeter or so, but the lens continues to work fine in auto focus.

Not sure what happened to it. If you found out how to fix his, do contact me.

Why are all of my photos blurry? I have a Canon Rebel T2i

You have the focus set to manual. Either turn the focus ring yourself, or find the little switch on the lens that turns it on (MF = manual focus, AF = auto focus).

My canon rebel XSi will not auto focus

Actually what I found to solve the problem was to first set the lens in "MF" and practice taking a picture manually to see if that would work. When I did this, I discovered that the fine tuning portion of the lens was somehow stuck mechanically. I heard a loud click as I turned it. That was all it took to fix the focusing mechanism on the lens. Then I set to "AF" and Voila, the camera worked just fine.

Pulling gently on the focus ring worked for us. Exactly what the Dr. ordered. Slight pop, maybe 1/16" movement, and the lens is working again!

Manual Focussing failure with Canon EF 100-400mm SLR zoom lens

I doubt if there is anything you can do yourself. The manual focus may have debris under the ring or is in need of parts. I would leave this one to a tech.
