canon has poor customer service with lot of errors on scanning, faxing options on their printers. buying canon products usually come with persistent headaches

Try this approach:1. Uninstall your existing printer driver. On your computer, go to Start menu > Programs > Lexmark X5600 Series folder > Tools > Uninstall. After the uninstall process, reboot your pc when prompted.2. When your pc turns on, check if your Windows 7 is running on 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. On your computer, go to Start menu > right-click on Computer > click on Properties. Take note of the System Type.3. Use the link below to download and re-install the corresponding printer driver for your operating system:- Lexmark X5650 Printer Driver for Windows 7 32-bit- Lexmark X5650 Printer Driver for Windows 7 64-bitSimply follow the instructions on your computer screen to complete the installation.4. To re-install the Lexmark OCR scan software, insert the printer software installation CD in your pc CD-ROM drive.5. Click on Install > Install Additional Software > select the Lexmark OCR Scan Software > continue with normal installation steps.
Then try to create a PDF or Scan and Edit text (OCR) to verify that the problem is fixed.

Please install and run the below mentioned software to automatically diagnose and fix scanning issue:
HP Scan Diagnostic Utility
After installing this utility,

1. Press the Power button to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
2. From the Scanner column in the Scan Diagnostic Utility, select your HP product.
3. Click Diagnose . The Scan Diagnostic Utility diagnoses various scanning problems, and then displays a list of results. The results display either when the tool detects an error, or when the tool completes the diagnosis and there are no errors.
   If this utility doesn't solve your issue, please revert back.

67 error is an "internal RAM, scan buffer, Dynamic RAM controller or miscellaneous interface hardware error. That's from the book.
If power cycling he printer doesn't fix it, have the formatter board replaced.

With your printer in a USB port, type WIAACMGR onto Windows start bar line and hit enter. This will establish connection with your printer for scans - only I cannot yet figure out how to do PDF conversions. Hope this helps.

Windows 7 will just have the printer drivers for this unit by default. If you want to be able to scan, you should install the full version of the drivers which is available from the HP website. Just search for your model number, select the operating system, download and install.

There is a workaround. As you no doubt know, windows 7 doesn't install HP solution center. So, to get a scan from your printer, or to send a fax etc,. you need to go to start > All probrams > Windows Fax and Scan.
From this program you gain all the functionality of your printer/fax/scanner, however the scan buttons do not work on the printer.

Go to your network and sharing center. Choose homegroup and sharing options. Change advanced sharing settings. Under your home or work profile, scroll down to file sharing connections. Switch to enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption. If that does not work, under password protected sharing, select "turn off password protected sharing". This is not recommended if you use your computer in multiple locations (laptop). I have found that turning all of these features off, running a scan from the printer successfully and then turning them back on, Windows seems to be comfortable allowing the printer to connect to the computer.
