Question about Linksys RV042 VPN Router

1 Answer

I am a novice with computers, but just had a Brighthouse "Lighting" modem installed. It goes straight to my RV042 router, which goes to the computer (and also a Mac Airport...better range than the modem). The speed of the modem is about 50,000 kbps, but the specs of the router say 10/100 mbps throughput so I did not think that would be a problem. Everything works fine for a while, then I have to unplug and restart the router...if just disconnects and I lose the internet. It used to do this with the old slower modem, but maybe once every few days. Now its once every hour or so. Any ideas?

> everything is good

The connection between each computer and the router is the "good" part.

Thus, the router is routing packets "between" each of the computers (clients & servers) within your local area network.

However, your problem seems to be on the 'WAN' (Wide Area Network) side, namely between the router's WAN port and the DSL-modem, and/or between the DSL-modem and the telephone-jack on the wall, and/or the telephone-wires inside your walls, and/or the telephone-wires from the outside of your building to the nearest telephone company's CO (Central Office).

As a test, disconnect the router from the DSL-modem, and directly connect one computer, to see if the "then it will/not" behaviour still happens when the router is not active, i.e., "bypassed".
Then, contact your ISP, and get them to trouble-shoot while that one computer is connected.

Hi!

We need to isolate and troubleshoot from wall out. First, you need to check that your internet line is working by connecting your computer directly to your internet line (take off the router from the scene). If that doesn't work, you need to call your ISP to get you up and running first with your PC. As soon as it's up that's the only time you can add the router to the network.

Once confirmed, follow steps from this site:

Hey Chris

This kinds of issues are coming from the firmware of your router. So what you need to do is to upgrade the firmware of your router and make sure that you use a wired computer to do that. After the upgrade make sure that you reset the valet for about 1 minute. Just reconfigure the router so that it will be in sync with the modem. Usually with brighthouse, it will just go online right away.

PS3 and Netgear WGR614 V7 Router

Basically the PS3 wireless settings needs to be configures with the Netgear wireless router settings.
To test if the modem is connects to the Internet, connect a computer into the modem, if it works then the modem is configured correctly. If it doesn't work, then contact your ISP and get them to test your modem connection.
For details on how to configure the PS3 click on the WEB link :-

DSL connection not being shared by Linksys RV042 Dual Wan router

Looks like your "modem" is actually a gateway, as is common with DSL devices. It's acting like a modem and a router. So you're actually connecting a router to your RV42. You could get this to work a couple ways.
1. Leave the modem acting like a router and configure the WAN connection on the RV42 as a static IP, and use the IP of the modem. You may also be able to use "obtain IP automatically" in the WAN connection. This way, the modem stores your PPOE information and just forwards the traffic to the RV42. Any devices behind the RV42 won't know the difference.
2. Configure the modem as just a modem (no routing). Your ISP should be able to talk you through this, but in the modem configuration you can look for what's usually called "bridged mode." Then you would enter the PPOE information in the RV42. This is my preferred method.

Computers Do not find DI-704P router linked to Apris TM402G/110 Cable modem

Make sure that the cables are in the right place, computers should be connected to one of the 4 ethernet ports and the cable from the modem goes to the WAN port of the router, here's a picture, the WAN port is the closest one to the print server port.
If this is ok and still no internet than try to power down the router and the modem for a bit like 5-10 sec and put power back on, first the modem than the router, if this didn't help you out than you have to do some deeper configuration.
First you need to log in to the router while connected via cable to it. Open a web browser and type 192.168.0.1(it's the default ip address of the router), if it's not asking for username and password than start menu>run type in CMD and press enter, a DOS window will pop, type in IPCONFIG and press enter, the command's output will be something like this
The default gateway is what you need, that's the router's address, type that in the browser, it will ask for username and password, by default it's
Username: admin
Password: (just leave it blannk, no password)
or if it's not working:
Username: admin
Password: admin

You can use the wizard to finish the job, and don't forget to push the clone the MAC address button during the process. That should do it, but if you still have problems there's a very very detaliled howto from D-link over here.

The software that was installed for the router should have detailed step by step instructions to get the pc online. If you have followed all the steps try below.
Check and see that the modem is enabled for the computer. There is also a place to troubleshoot the modem connection there.

  1. Double-click Modems, right-click your modem, and then click Properties.
  2. In Device usage, select Use this device (enable) from the drop down list, and then click OK.
note.gif Note
  • To open Device Manager, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

In that list you will see modems, click the box for the drop down and right click the correct choice (if more that one) then click properties and make sure the device is enabled.
