TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

    Does this do anything?

hi, its the lighting cause the only button that works is the on button. I cant even turn it off.

Remove all four AAA batteries. Press and hold the ON key for ten seconds. Replace the batteries. Turn the calculator on. Anything now?

Having gone five months without a response, I assume the reset solved the problem.

Reset the calculator by taking out all of the batteries, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Replace the batteries and see if it works again. If not, remove all of the batteries again, this time include the backup battery (you'll need a small phillips screwdriver). Wait 5 minutes and reinstall the batteries. Hope it works for you. g.

How do I fix my TI-84 Plus Silver Edition if none of the buttons will work?

Will the calculator turn on at all? If not, check the batteries first. There is a little coin battery that stores memory for the device behind where the regular batteries sit. This does not often fail, but could cause the thing to not power up. Note: removing the coin battery will clear any information stored on your calculator.

If the device is stuck in an infinite loop, or is unresponsive with the busy icon, try pressing and holding the "2nd", left, right and "on" buttons in that order and holding them all at the same time. This is the command to cancel whatever process the device is working and clear the internal memory (At least on the TI-89. I'm not 100% sure the command works on an 84).

The buttons on my TI-84 do not work

Do you mean that NONE of the buttons work? Not even the on button?

----------------------------- IF NOT ALL BUTTONS HAVE GONE HAYWIRE ------------------------------------
The contacts underneath the keypad are probably amiss. This is a good thing, a common thing, and an easy thing to fix. You can fix this at home, at no cost, and at your leisure. Here's how:

STEP ONE: Get a skinny screwdriver
STEP TWO: Unscrew all the screws on the back of that screwed up device
STEP THREE: Remove the face plate (use a little care)
STEP FOUR: Examine & fix
4a. Dust off
4b. Re-seat all the soft-key contacts that may be off their rockers
4c. Remove any residue

So, if only a few buttons have gone awry then this should work for your TI-84.

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.

Garbage Collecting

graphing calulators work much like computers. The have RAM space so they can remember what you have done recently and stuff like that. So when it's garbage collecting it means it's trying to find more space. This generally means that you don't have much much ARC or RAM space left. You can see this under your memerory manager. (2nd + enter) then you can reset your calculaor(2nd plus 7 1 2) or you can go to memory manager and unarchive your programs. Fur an example you have TI 84. Most new TI 84 have sientific tools. so if you don't you it take away the archive (*) by pressing enter and then hit DEL. the more RAM space and ARC space should make it so it doens't garababe collect. Hope this works. i can help you more if this doesn't work. GOOD LUCK
