Sony Stereo not working with Yamaha HTR 5850

I recently had my house painted and the painter unplugged everything and replugged it all in. In doing this he somehow messed up my stereo connection to the surround sound and I can't seem to get it reconnected. The manual is also of no help. When I installed it a couple years ago I did it with a friend and haven't touched it since. I need someone to help me figure out what is plugged into the wrong place!

Everything else I have figured out. The only one I can't get to work is the Sony Stereo, purchased in 2000. He left a few things unplugged altogether and a few items I think he may have plugged into the wrong spot. I don't want to start plugging and unplugging everything and then screwing up the TV and speakers as well.

i already have the manual, it still doesn't help for a clear diagram.

The radio works...I am pretty convinced the problem is stuff is not plugged in correctly going out of the sony and going into the yamaha and/or the subwoofer, which is also messed up. Could you tell me how many things should be plugged into the back of the Sony and under what input/outputs? He left nothing plugged in there. And then what outlets in the yamaha should they plug in to? And the one input plug on the back of my subwoofer, what should that go into? Sorry for so many questions.

I am guessing all your connections haven't changed and perhaps the configurations have been wiped. First thing to try is to turn on an input you know works, like the radio built into the amp, make sure you get sound out of the Yamaha. If not check the speaker A/B buttons next to the power button. If the radio works move on to the sony, how is it connected? Make sure the yamaha is configured to use the right type of input for the sony, not just the number of the input but also the type, press the input mode button several times, the one next to the input knob on the right,  while on the input for the sony.
If none of that works the amp may have seen a short circuit on the mains which may has caused damage. if thats the case it needs to be repaired by a qualified repair technician.
Good Luck.

sorry, not a short but a surge form disconnecting the power, when turning the power back on to your entire house there is a bit of a jolt that I have seen do strange stuff like take out one computer and not another on the same surge suppressor.

Anyways, yes, getting a hold of the manual will be a good idea if the radio works and you need to reconfigure the inputs to what they are supposed to be.

Can you give us the list of any other device that you want to connect to it?

I would suggest to check if all the speakers are working with the radio from your Yamaha HTR 5850, if you do now is time to connect the other device and make sure you select the proper inputs.

How many devices you are connecting?

My htr-5850 just stopped producing sound while using the cable TV. I muted it once and when I took it off mute I have not been able to get the TV's sound to work since. I have no idea what to do. Any...

How is TV sound coming into your Yamaha? If it's from the TV analog audio then maybe the TV's audio output is muted.

If it's from the Cable Box maybe ITs audio is muted. I'd refer to the guide for the Cable Box.

MUTE on the receiver is not source-specific.

Yamaha HTR-5850 Receiver Audio -left front speaker output problem

Does the speaker setup fail the same way?

Yes? Internal amplifier problem.

If No - What source(s) do this?

If just one - reverse its Left and Right inputs to determine which cable or channel on the input device is faulty.

How do I hook my ipod to this yamaha device HTR-5850 -- is there a piece of hardware I can get to interface? thanks

Get a 1/8" miniplug-to-RCA-cable adapter and plug the headphone output directly into any compatible input on the receiver. Press PLAY.

Read the article (it's short). Don't buy into the hype about better cables. IPOD's don't stack up as hi-fi to begin with and cables are cables are cables....

How do I connect pc to htr-5850

You will need an adapter cable available on ebay or at radio shack.

Should have a 1/8" mini male stereo plug on one side and a set (left and right) male RCA plugs on the other end.

Simply plug into the output of your sound card or motherboard (usually blue or green) into any available input (EXCEPT PHONO) on your receiver.

select that input and it should work

hope that helps

Microphone for my YAMAHA HTR-5440

Let me make this clear to you that your Yamaha does not support Microphone but the trick is you can still do it. All you need is a stereo jack to a RCA connector cable.Check this out http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/connection/jack-stereo-rca-2.html It is easily available in the market. The stereo jack will fit into your microphone and the RCA to your Amplifier/Reciever. Plug the RCA into CD/Tape input but not in the Phono n do your thing. Let me know if this works, coz I'm really curious.

Bi-Amping my speakers with HTR-5850

You can at a minimum, bi-wire your speakers by wiring the speakers with the A and B speaker outputs. The A speaker outputs end up running the tweeters and the B will end up powering the woofers.

Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver

Is Yamaha HTR-640 a receiver? Try HDMI from PS3 to receiver or Sony HDTV. If HDMI from PS3 to receiver the you need and HDMI from receiver to out Sony HDTV. You could connect everything to receiver and HDMI out to HDTV. You can not have an HDMI cable AND an optical cable coming out of the PS3, only one or the other.
