Has Bigpond supplied you with setup details or an installation CD?

  • s2_annie Oct 01, 2010

yup, i can use the net if i use their standard modem. but not with the router.

  • s2_annie Oct 01, 2010

Thanks for that. I connected everything up correctly, but when i try to login to the router, an optus pop up appears and when i try to login to the router the internet explorer cannot display pops up.

To bypass the Optus login page type in the address bar
It will ask to disable the Optus login, accept, then close the page, open a new page and type in the address bar
And you will be at the router login
Username: admin password: password
Best of luck

Is telstra bigpond a cable or dsl? if it is DSL you need a username and password for the setup of the router. If its a cable its a plug and play, all you need is to plug in the connections properly.

ADSL, and the router supports it. I've tried, but i don't think I'm doing it right.

First, if you do not have the manual for the Netgear, then download this manual from this WEB site :-
Then connect this ADSL modem wireless router to your phone line. Don't forget to install the line filters as per fig 3.5 in the manual.
Then connect the LAN cable to the Netgear as per figure 3.6
Then login to the router and configure the router with the Bigpond ISP settings.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorised access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

If you still have problems, please get back to me with details up to where you were having the problem and the error messages.

This ADSL modem may be locked to Optus and may not allow you to use another ISP. In this case if Optus won't unlock this ADSL modem, then you may need to get another one. I suggest you get one from Telstra/Bigpond as they will have an installation CD already setup for their ADSL modem. If you need wireless make sure it is part of the modem.

    Anyway try this.

Connect a LAN cable to a LAN port on the Netgear, open a browser and enter the Netgear's configuration URL. this is -

    Te default login = admin

    The default PW = admin

Then configure the settings as per the Bigpond documentation.

My bigpond wireless elite gateway is failing and telstra no longer supplies them . They supplied a wi fi 4g advanced11 but it doesn't have Ethernet or computer ports. What can I replace the elite unit

There are lots of router suppliers out there on the internet and via amazon and ebay.

Look for a compatible broadband router, cable?

Wi-Fi included as well Ethernet connections.

All operate to agreed standards, so there should be no problem setting up the router.

Ya this is some what correct. You might be lacking on some system network setting. Just you have to do is make sharing of your network without any complecated authorised or password sharing. Thats it.

I have received a netgear Dg834g v5 with no instructions, so I am trying to download a instruction manual any advice would be helpful

Are you trying to set up router ?
You can set up your router manually, without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

I have just acquired a DG834G v5 upgrading from a v3. I am having problems installing on my iMac and am unclear what I need to do to get it connected. Do I have to uninstall my v3, if so how?.

Is there any other computer which is online using the same router ? if there is , then your router is working you just need to connect the MAC to the network.
If you are trying to set up the router from the start then it is not necessary to run the disc.

My router wireless transmission is not working and the light (for wireless transmission) is not coming on. All other wired connections are working. How can i fix this?

which version of dg834g do you have
its its v5 then it has a button located on top of it that enables/disables wireless connection
maybe you accidentally disabled it

if its any other version of dg834g the you can enable wireless transmission through the router page

Connect to the router by typing in the address bar of a browser.
if it asks for the id and password enter
id = admin
password = admin or password or leave it empty
these are default id and passwords, if you have changed them enter the id and password that you know

go to Wireless Settings
click on the checkbox that enables wireless transmission
save settings

and you are done

I have a THOMSON ST585v6sl with AOL running off

Well it may be possible, only if your wireless router supports WDS. Also, note that in DG834Gv3 , v4, v5 supports WDS. If you have v2 or v1 then it wont connet wirelss with your existing network.

Please reply if your existing wireless router has WDS and the version of the NETGEAR router so that I will provide you with the required steps to make it work wireless.

Internet & my mobile phone

You will need to use Optus to access the internet from your mobile (the data rates are way cheaper than Telstra anyway) as there is the internet connections are completely seperate. You'll still be able to check your Bigpond email though. Check the Telstra website for the "SMTP settings" you need.

How do i password protect my router from outsiders connecting

Hi, check out the support pages here:-

Select your model (v3,v4,v5 etc) then look at the setup pages. Set your security to WPA rather then WEP as this is easily crackable, and with WPA you can choose the password. You should also change the routers admin password to be extra safe.
Let me know if you need anymore help.
