Question about Kenmore 20.3 cu. ft. / 575 liter Upright Freezer 23024

1 Answer

Unit has been un-plugged for about a year, I plugged it in today it started right up and was cooling fine, it made a snap and the blower and compressor both quit running. The inside and door lights are still operating. Any help would help.

Just in case, leave it plugged in for another 60 minutes, its quite possible it went into the defrost cycle, in which case no motors will run. If it continues to remain silent, re post your problem.

You were correct the unit restarted about 30 minutes later and has been cooling fine, it fact since it restarted it has dropped internal temperature 35 degrees in 25 minutes.

If your freezer is a frost free, then it has probably stopped in a defrost cycle. The defrost timer is in the back lower left side of the unit, it has a little nub in the center on one side, if you can turn it clockwise and the unit comes on, you will need to replace the timer part #297318010

Vulcan 300 chest freezer has been in storage for a few years! i plugged it in & all seems to be working fine, but alarm light is on & it is not cooling

the compressor can freeze(as in seize up not cold) when in storage for a while. it is always best to run the unit every now and then as the oil for the compressor is self contained and only works when running

its the ptc overload relay on the side of the compressor body,it aids in starting the compressor by momentarily putting your start and run windings in parallel to overcome" locked rotor current",then drops out start windings after unit has come up to operating speed,it also protects the windings if the compressor cant start, they simply unplug off the compressor and the replacement plugs in the same, replace the capacitor connected to this if applicable as this protects the ptc's overload relay contacts

You should try to un-plug the freezer and let it stand up-right over night to re-settle the freon back down inside of the compressor.

The compressor should normally get hot if it is doing it's job right, and there is a starter for the compressor motor (usually it looks like a large capacitor) that could have failed, or the defrost timer (if it has one) could be stuck, and you should be able to see the small dial on the defrost timer slowly turning, and if it does not turn, then replace the defrost timer.

looks like you have a problem with the damper control. try to locate the sensor for the damper control and relocate it, if still not cold, replace it.

13 months old Kenmore compressor very hot.

lacdoi,
huuum At your service!

You said,
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).

MY ADVICE:
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
Replace it.

You will be fine

Bless You huuum

Please give me the best rating for my fine advice before you sign off.
Thank you

UNIT NOT COOLING(IS RUNNING WHEN PLUGGED)

only reason refrigerent may be needed is that there is a leak so adding more will achieve nothing. unlikely to be needed. i assume compressor is running. probable causes of no cooling are compressor fault or a blockage in the pipe sysyem. not diy
