Question about KitchenAid Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My KitchenAid microwave oven's model number is KCMS185JSS-4. Manufacture date is July 2005. It's been working fine until today, with an occasional glitch in the digital readout... sometimes the letters get a ghost-like appearance. But today, heating a frozen tray of edamame (like we've done lots of times before), the unit literally fried the tray of food, was filled with steamy smoke/vapor, and thankfully flipped the breaker. I unplugged the unit, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and then plugged it back in. I set the time, and put a coffee mug of water in and set the timer for one minute. The oven comes on, rotates the turntable, but the water doesn't get hot at all. I tried a couple of times, but I think the "heating" element... whatever that is, is probably burnt. The unit does have a burnt smell... like something electronic is now toast! Have there been any problems with this model? Any recalls?

Either your high voltage rectifier or magnetron (or both) has failed.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

I have a KitchenAid microwave model # KCMS185JSS. Everything works except it stopped heating up anything. Is there a separate fuse for the microwave heating? Where is it? can I fix this myself?

Sounds like the microwave's magnet tron (join two words together this page will not allow the correct word) the has gone down. They only last a short time depending on use. Not a great job to do on your own (if you do not know what you are doing) the part cost about 35pounds so most cheap microwaves are not worth repairing, if it is an expensive one it may be worth paying for the repair.

Kitchenaid Superba KEMS307D Microwave buzzes, looks like it works, but doesn't heat. Full normal display, tray rotates, but fan doesn't sound normal.

Most likely causes - shorted high voltage rectifier, or failed high voltage transformer, or shorted high voltage capacitor, or shorted magnetron. If an odor accompanied the failure, high voltage rectifier or transformer most likely. All of these components operate on 4000 v, or more - with enough current to kill you. Make sure the unit is unplugged, and the high voltage capacitor is fully discharged before testing.

Door open button won't work on KitchenAid microwave model YKCMS135H

Page 3 of the exploded view here shows the door open parts 24510L and 250201 (or 23551B if your full model number is YKCMS135HSS).

What look like part numbers seem to be reference numbers.

My Kenmore 721.63259301 would not heat items up so I came here and saw the parts required and was just about to order them when I checked the online owners manual and found this. FULL FIVE-YEAR WARRANTY ON
THE MAGNETRON For five years from the date of purchase, if the
magnetron in this Kenmore microwave oven
fails due to a defect in material or workmanship,
Sears will repair it free of charge.
My microwave has a manufacture date of July 2009 so I will be taking it right to the closest Sears repair center for a free repair. I suggest everyone do the same.

My KCMS185JSS-5 microwave has no heat. It seems to be running, the light and turn table all work, but it won't heat water.

hi..Your micro hood is "shot".so it is not working properly.
The food may not be heating, but the electrical and the walls
of the unit might heat. This may cause sparking and melting
of the interior of the unit.
check it out..
thank u..
kindly rate my response..

The "auto Sensor" on my kitchenaid KCMS185JSS microwave does not work, but everything else does.

That's probably a failed humidity sensor, and repairing that is a pretty easy do it yourself job.

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.
