Question about Sylvania DVR90VE DVD Recorder/VCR

Unit stopped working

Sylvania DVR90VF DVD Recorder with Cassette Recorder has worked fine for the year that I've had it. Now at power on the TV displays just a blank blue screen. When remote is activated the screen shows hash and unreadable jumbled text. Does this sound terminal or can it be corrected by opening the case and cleaning any components? The above problem occurs whether DVD or Cassette is installed.

My thanks to bestdarngood, Irish Druid, and Ekse for the responses to my Sylvania DVR 90VF problem. I tried the suggestions that were offered, but no luck. I opened up the recorder today and found soot and a scorched circuit board under the hard drive. I'm afraid this unit is headed for the trash unless I get a decent repair quote. Thanks again to all of you for your input.

The first thing to always try is a hard reset, this requires the unit to be totally unplugged for 30 minutes to see if that works. Did this screen come up during use or did it happen when you jsut turned it? Please let me know both how this goes and get back to me on my question, thanks

Try replugging the cable b/w TV and Player. Make sure contacts are good.

Try a hard reset: Unplug the player from the wall socket, remove all other cables, wait about 10 minutes and then replug to power socket and redo cabling.

You can also try to open the player's cover and try blowing out any dust/debris using a can of compressed air.

If all that fails to resolve the issue, then it could be a problem with the circuitry, for which you will either need to get it serviced, or replaced (whichever works out cheaper for you). If it is still under warranty, try to call the manufacturer/point of purchase for an exchange.

Hope that helps!

Please also try using a different cable b/n TV and player, or try using a different connector like SCART or RCA..

It doesn't sound too good. Unplug it for a hour or two and see what happens

Check the power cord to make sure it is fitting snuggly. Possibly change where ti plugs into the socket. If that does not work, it would appear that your machine has reached the end of its life. Usually it is cheaper to buy new than have the broke one repaired.

Yes! you are right, this almost sounds like a captions problem, check the DVD/VCR Combo menu, if it has captions turn it off using your remote.

Unfortunately without a firmware upgrade the only disks you can use are DVD-R or DVD-RW. The tricky part is that you can ONLY USE 2X speed. Per my conversation with Sylvania there is a firmware update that will allow you to use up to 8x disks, but they are charging $17.00 for it.
