Question about Samsung HCN653W 65" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

I have a samsung HCN653WX/XAA tv. i had red wavy lines across the screen and was told that the audio video input board was bad. so purchased a brand new board, and installed it. after turning the tv on for the first time, i discovered that the lines were still there, and now the colors arent aligning up, and the perfect focus doesnt work, it gets to 22% and then stops. the screen also has a bow in it on the top and bottom. Would the convergence board cause this? or could it be something with the audio video input board

just to give you a little more of an update, i just replaced the convergence board today and the problem was the same. With the old audio video input board, there were just the red wavey lines, when i tried to do the perfect focus, it only went up to 4% with the new convergence board and the old audio/video input board. it wouldnt go past 4% and then just went back to the tv screen. i noticed as soon as it went back to the tv screen the image was better, but then after a few seconds, it went back to the red wavy lines. When i put the new audio/video input board in with the new convergence board, there are 3 images of everything, red green and blur i believe. and when i hit the auto focus, the % bar at the bottom crooked, and it wont go past 0%. i will get pictures to you in about an hour, im at work right now.

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok i will just send them to the email

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok. i will be home at 5 so as soon as i get home i will send it

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok. do you wont a picture of it with both the new audio/video board and the old one?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

yes there are red lines on both. they look a little different on the dvd side. but they are there

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

yes. the lnes are on all imput screens

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

i dont have the service book. so what can i do to diagnose it more?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

i apologize. as far as the convergence goes. the colors are all lined up. no problems with that. i will check the connections now. wich sodders should i pay attention to

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok i checked the red wires and they are all tight. i checked the soders on the bottoms of the board next to the audio/video input board and they all looked good. thats the board you were talking about right. the one with the black box with the one thick red wire coming out?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

i dont know anyone with this tv. i will contact a repair shop though. how much does this board usually run? and is there anything else it could be

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok. just to clearify. the new board i got was an entirely different problem. i couldnt tell if the lines were still there because the image was that bad. is it possible i got a bad board? and it still may be the video/audio input board?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

ok. so my next step is to find a tv repair shop with the deflection board?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

oh ok. well thankyou for all your help. will i be able to post something on this in a couple days to let you know how i made out?

  • littlekxride Oct 05, 2010

    ok. thanks again

  • littlekxride Oct 06, 2010

Hey. all the tv repair shops i am calling are saying they cant test a single board, that they need the whole tv to diagnosis the problem. is this true?

  • littlekxride Oct 10, 2010

ok so i went to plug the power supply back into the deflection board and i heard a little pop type of noise and now the tv wont turn on. checked the fuse and its good. should i just go ahead and replace this board?

  • littlekxride Oct 10, 2010

tried the convergence board. still same problem

  • littlekxride Oct 10, 2010

you did try to help. and i was very thankful. but after hundreds of dollars i still have the same problem and now your saying to take it to a tv repair shop. just trying to get a second opinion. not trying to spend thousands. id be better of buying a new one

It could be either or both things you suspect, but I'd start with the convergence board for sure. It is very possible both are having issues though.

Thanks

Hi,
You can confirm new convergence issue cause by installing old audio-video board back and also check all connectors are plugged properly in respective jacks in circuit board.
Can you post wavy lines screen image here to diagnose its possible cause?
That will give me better idea to diagnose problem.
Thanks.

    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

OK, two pictures received, do these lines appear in all inputs? like watching dvd or cable channels etc?

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

Does convergence seems ok with old board?
These lines are some sort of distortion from deflection board side. Check red thick wires are plugged tightly in HV block that feeds high voltage to all three picture tubes.
There could be dry solder connections in video board and deflection board that is causing these lines.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

Do you have service manual copy of this model?
I do have similar model service manual HC-M653WX but not HC-N653WX
If you have service manual, pass it in email.
    Thanks.

Deflection board that has flyback transformer mounted on it, its middle board, turn that board upside down and give close look to solder joints, look for dull/ blackish solder joints to resolder them, normal solder connection looks shiny.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

Your old video board is fine too as new board does not solve red wavy lines/ noise problem so no need to put new video board in tv.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

    Yes, that is deflection board.
Can you swap deflection board in similar model tv nearby, or maybe a friend have same model?
Local tv repair shop can help you out to swap boards just to test what board is causing red wavy noisy lines.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

We are still in diagnostic process as what board is creating noisy red lines, video board is not of that as you replaced it but lines are still there.
Once you got confirmed that particular board is defective then search it with part number written on board to find out best price.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

New video board has no convergence data, consider it as empty, and you have to perform convergence adjustment by going in service mode/ menu and it is job of professional to do that because any wrong input will turn off tv.
Professional knows how to do convergence adjustment in new video board, then you will get converge picture to observe wavy/ nosy red lines in picture.

  • Shahid Electronics
    Shahid Electronics Oct 05, 2010

Let me explain it, find a tv repair shop that can test your deflection and any other boards in tv if they have similar model tv in for some repair purpose to find out what board is causing red wavy lines to get it replaced.

Intermittent black lines samsung hlp5067w

When the lines are showing, check to see if you can see them with the on screen menu being displayed, if you can then it is the DMD board, if you cannot then it is just the digital board.

Have Samsung HLN567W and recently started having

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
