There's a shaft going from one wheel to the other a gear on the end of the shaft heald from turning with a key ( can be broken) then the gear is running on a gear made on the inside of the wheel, ( gear can be striped or wheel can be striped or the wheel can be coming off and the gear does'nt tou=ch the wheel. remove the wheel that doesn't pull and you can see the problem. Go on the internet to MTD and with your model number and serial number you can see the parts diagram for your mower and pick out the parts that you need.

The self propel system slowly stopped working and now doesn't work at all, what could it be?

Hello,

You didn't specify the make or model of your mower, but generically speaking for self-propelled walk-behind mowers, the drive belt or the front wheel gears can wear out after several years of use. The drive belt could also be loose or off the pulley. The belt and the front wheels can usually be replaced.

You can remove the drive pulley cover and see if the belt is off.

The other components that make up the drive system are the gearbox and the engagement cable. Sometimes the cable can get get out of adjustment or come loose.

Tip

Fix the self-propelled function (MTD, Yardman, Troy-Built, others)

I just purchased a used Yardman 24A-203C701 which, as the title states, has similar variants among other brands.
If you remove either hubcap from the pneumatic drive wheels, you may see the drive pawls with thin pieces of nylon (like a wire ty-wrap) sticking out either side. This is what passes for the engagement spring for the pawls. The fix is to remove each pawl and modify them as follows: Remove the nylon piece. On the rear side of the pawl, under the short end which engages the axle shaft, there is a place where you can drill a 1/8" pilot hole. Expand the size to 5/32" (the drill will want to catch on the pawl's metal, so drill carefully) and tap for 8-32 threads. Buy four 8-32 Allen head bolts which are 5/8" long and four 8/32 hex nuts. Using Loc-Tite on the threads, install one Allen bolt and hex nut into the front side of each pawl. When the threads are flush with the rear side of the pawl, tighten the hex nuts to jam the fastener in place. Purchase four small extension springs which just fit over the Allen bolts and which have just enough tension to pull the pawls into engagement with the axle shaft. The machine will then pull with both wheels but can still be turned and even pulled backwards.

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

Yardman snowblower won't self-propel

Do not start to do this but put the blower in gear like you would run to drive its self and try to turn the wheels by hand and if they turn easily then you may have a shear pin that is broken or missing in the drive pulley.
Just a thought.

Lawnboy 10665 won't self-propel and impossible to push

If you have the smell of rubber burning the belt isn't gripping. Make sure that there isn't anything stopping the wheels turning like old grass or even a piece of twig. If their clear try adjusting the tension on the drive pully.
