I'm a Mac user and recently bought a used Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 scanner. I installed the software but the scanner doesn't initialize and there's a big red circle with a horizontal line through it over the ScanSnap Manager in my dock.

I'm afraid it wasn't from someone like through ebay. A business closed down, they distributed the physical assets to the employees who were being laid off. I bought it from him. I would try returning it if it really doesn't work, but I suspect I would probably have to eat the cost if it doesn't.

I posted a reply. I don't know if I was supposed to "Add a comment" instead. So I'll do that as well. I bought from someone who was an employee of a business that closed down. The owner divided physical assets between the employees.
The scanner does beep when plugged in to the computer, but that seems to be all it does.

I just need a second opinion. If another expert agrees with the first, I guess I'll just throw my hands up and give up. I don't think I'll be able to get my money back, so I'd like to be sure that there is no other option than to throw away the scanner.

The solution helped. I could have spent a lot more time and money trying to get this dud scanner to work. Thanks.

That's not a good sign at all, even without the software installed your Mac should be able to use that ScanSnap software without issues. This tells me there is something physically wrong with the scanner itself. I hope you can still return the item... was it from somewhere like eBay? If so you can easily file a claim and get your money back on the scanner.

Let me know, I am checking what else it could possibly be, but it is not even seeing that the scanner is there at this point, which is a very bad sign.

I am quite certain it does not work. My suspicion is it was sitting in a drawer or something at this old business, someone had trouble with it some time ago and instead of throwing it out like they should have, they put it in a drawer. When the business shut down they just found in there and auctioned it off with everything else. I would definitely try and get the money back if it was me... Sadly it sounds like it's dead for sure...

Scansnap s1300 drivers

Fujitsu has the drivers in the installation software package. That's why you should install the ScanSnap Manager before connecting the USB cable between your computer and the scanner. If your OS tried to install a generic driver, you may need to delete that driver and unplug the USB cable before continuing. In Windows, this is in the device manager.

The software for all of the Fujitsu scanners is here: https://www.fujitsu.com/us/support/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/drivers/index.html . Follow the link to the ScanSnap downloads and then click the link for Software Downloads. Scroll down to the discontinued models to find the link to the S1300 software. The current link to the S1300 software is https://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/scansnap/software/s1300.html . Note: the software is available for Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista through Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit). The Mac version supports several editions of the OS X.

I hope this helps.

My ScanSnap has worked flawlessly for years. I just tried to scan and got the following message: undefined error occurred.(0xffffdcf7) Won't scan. Tried to reboot - no luck. Let me know...

The same thing happened to me. In a nutshell, you have to install new drivers. Have you recently upgraded your system to SnowLeopard or Lion? I did, and that's what went wrong.

To do:
1. Make sure you have the latest ScanSnap manager: http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/peripheral/scanners/drivers/mac.html
Install that.
2. Get the Lion update: http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/peripheral/scanners/drivers/mac-mg22.html
Install that.
3. Open the new ScanSnap Manager (v 2.2). Delete the old one from your dock, so you don't get confused.
4. Scan away.

You'll have to go to the Fujistu website, follow links for support and downloads entering the details of your operating system and scanner model as you go. You should find the drivers available there for free.
