Does what support sata?
look on the board, does it have sata ports, they will be by the ide sockets.
Or google the motherboard model number and specs.
You will get your detailed specifications.
OR write make with the make and model

System not recognizing dvd writer. new build. 2nd one I took the first one back thinking it was defective. HP dvd1270i dvd writer

Could be the motherboard's SATA connection is bad or not activated in the BIOS. I assume you have tested the SATA cable and verified that the SATA power connector is working. You may need to verify in the computer's BIOS that the SATA settings are on and correct. Do you have another SATA drive that is known to work that you can test in the computer to verify the SATA connection is working? Also some motherboards have a jumper on the board to disable and enable the SATA connection on the board. Verify that if there is a jumper it is in the correct position.

Do all motherboards support sata dvd

SATA is a relatively new technology, it is only 5 or 6 years old depending on the MB manufacturer. If this MB doesn't have built-in SATA connectors you may purchase an off-board SATA connector from several web based or local computer stores. This assumes that you are using an OS that supports SATA. Windows 2K and newer should support it adequately.

some via chipsets require the drives be jumpered to 150mbps, sata 2 is 300mbps. should work otherwise sata 2 is backwards compatible. read the paper on the drives they should have a jumper.
