    Hi Tim,

There is no paper jammed, I have tried shutting it on & off, still the same message & the red light on.

Let me unplug it & I will get back to you.

    Thanks

Ok, so did the document actually jam in the scanner feeder? Did you remove the jam? If it did not jam just turn off the copier / printer and try turning it back on. Does it still say jam? If so then turn it off again, unplug it this time and leave it unplugged for at least 2 minutes. Replug it in, then turn it back on. Of course only do these steps if you are CERTAIN there is nothing jammed in the scanner feeder.

Thanks
Tim

Strange, I didn't realize two people could help at once, must be something new they are doing. It sounds like the sensor for the scanner area has failed to me personally. If it's detecting a jam where there definitely is no jam, it must mean the sensor itself is having issues. It may need some repairs to get it to scan again :(.

Check if something is stuck. Lift the top cover where the sheets of paper go through when you fax. On the right of the black rectangular piece with grey roller there is a slot in the tray with a black lever inside. Check if the black lever is in place.

Also, you can use a can of compressed air and give the machine a good spray.

The sensor might be dirty or dislodged.

    1. Check all sensor flags and make sure they are moving freely.

    2. Remove the transfer roll cartridge and clean the density sensor.Clean it with a soft cloth.

If this still persist, it is possible that sensor is already defective that is why it is showing a faulty message.

The fax is received by the other party but we receive an error code J72. There is no jam

Dear
If you are sending the fax using ADF, there may be the document jam, Open the ADF cover check the path for any foreign objects.
Also you can send from platen glass without document jam.

Also this may happen to the other end fax machine, better you do a test copy from ADF and Platen glass. and confirm your fax machine is ok.
Thanks.

My mfc240c says to replace the yellow ink cartridge but I don't want to spend money on that if the 'light bulb' is ruined. When I turn on the machine, I don't see any light for scanning or copying. ...

By the "light bulb," do you mean the scanner lamp? That lamp should only turn on when you are actually scanning, faxing, or copying a document. You should be able to still use the machine to scan and fax, even with the yellow ink empty. Try scanning a document to see if the scanner lamp comes on.

As far as printing or copying goes, you won't be able to print or copy anything until you replace the yellow ink, even if you try printing in black and white only.

Hi. Open the document control panel and look in with a flashlight and see if the jam switch is stuck. also look for a small piece of paper that might be stuck in there. The jam is in where you put documents in to fax out. Lawrence

Document Jam Error Message on Brother MFC-8660DN

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC-8460 and called Brother's support line. The solution that worked for me was to lift the top cover where the sheets of paper go through when you fax. On the right of the black rectangluar piece with grey roller there is a slot in the tray with a black lever inside. The black piece was stuck down inside the slot and had to be popped back out. Once it was out I hit the stop button and it was fixed!!
