Question about Carrier 38CKC036 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Hi: I have a Carrier 38CMC42300 AC unit which will not turn on and the air handler is blowing hot air. The 40 amp breaker for the AC unit trips right away when reset. Could this be a condenser or motor problem? Note: an assessment by a service tech has recommended the whole unit be replaced (it's 8 years old). Any suggestions are welcome.

Carrier model 38tdb air conditioning unit kicks out the 40 amp breaker. Also moisture under compressor unit outside. What is problem?

What breaker? The breaker for the condenser? Likely have a compressor shorted to ground or drawing locked rotor amps. Easiest way to tell is make sure breaker off, unhook compressor wires from contactor. Turn on breaker and turn on machine. If the breaker does not trip, obviously problem with compressor

Why does my 40 amp breaker for my 5 ton Rheem AC keep tripping? Not my air handler

Hello, usually if the compressor is shorted to ground it will keep tripping t he breaker. One way you can check yhis is disconnect power to the outdoor unit and use a ohmeter to check each winding of the compressor to ground. You can use the discharge line from the compressor as a ground, you should not read any resistance, if ou do the compressor is shorted to ground and will need to be replaced.

Compatability of a R22 air handler and a R410a heat pump

1. The units should match up without a problem.
2. You will need a 40 or 50 amp breaker for the A/H and 5 KW heat strip. You will probably need a 20 or 25 Amp for the condensing unit. I would check the FLA (full load amps) rating on both units, total them and install a breaker with no more than 20% more rating than the total. You can install a small box at the A/H with a breaker for the A/H and one for the condensing unit.

40 amp breaker at panel to air handler trips when you turn the heat on but not when the air is turned on

You could have one of two problems.

One , heaters could be shorted out causing the breaker to trip from and overdraw of current.

Two, your breaker could be weak and tripping prematurely.

TempStar 10 AC

visit www.gotempstar.com for the schematic on this unit. Coincidentally, your air handler unit should not draw 15.6 amps with an additional 40 for the heater.

Ben, you are on the right track. To upgrade the breaker, first look at the main house breaker panel and determine if allowing more current through main breaker will be taxing it too highly (will 20 more amps exceed my main breaker limit...what is the main breaker current trip at?) Then look at the wire size leading away from the 40 amp breaker to outside. If it is 6 gage copper or 4 gage copper-clad aluminum wire, you are ok to upgrade. Any smaller wire size could be unhealthy.

Most likely the transformer is shot on the air handler. To test this go to the thermostat and move the selector to fan on, if the fan blows it's not the transformer. Let me know. THX RepairUSA
