Question about Dremel Variable - Speed Multipro Rotary Tool 395

1 Answer

Dremel 300 variable speed mototool just stopped running in the middle of an important job I was trying to finish for a business customer of mine. At times when I push on the brush holder cover the tool will run sometimes, but then it just cuts out again. I checked the carbon brush condition and length. They seemed to be OK, but I replaced them anyway, but to no avail. Do you think there is a flat spot on the armature or do you think the commutator needs replacing? I didn't want to prematurely disassemble the tool until i got some expert advice on the possible problem. Thanks for your time and effort in responding to this e-mail question, Sincerely yours, Con

OK... You have done enough troubleshooting to give you some ideas to look at.

FLAT SPOTS: No !!! That just doesn't happen. If a winding or segment goes bad then you can tell this by having it in the failed mode and rotating it a small amount. If it runs, then MAYBE you have bad winding or segment. USUALLY this is accompanied by a lot of arcing at the commutator.

I have seen a LOT of these small motors have bad connections of the wires to the brush holders. Often these are clips that seem to get marginal. Since pressure there seems to affect it a bit, look to that possibility FIRST.

If this unit has a speed control, those can be a chronic failure.

Please note that the comutator and armature is a complete unit. You cannot just rplace the commutator.

These can get a little tight. Try a little WD40 on it. Hold little button to lock in place and use the wrench provided to unscrew it.

Dremel keeps turing off when moving it.

It's probably the cord, they usually fail right where they cord meets the tool. Experiment a little by bending the cord in this area slightly as it is running. If that confirms it, buy an extension cord of a similar size, and cut off the female end. You can re-use the strain relief (that's a rubber boot or coiled spring in the area of the failure). Carefully disassemble the dremel - taking pictures as you go. I assume you can solder. good luck, Al K

Dremel 395 in the middle of drilling sea glass and the collet and bit stop turning while the motor is still running fine! GRRRRR Thanks for any suggestions!

sounds like the rubber connector between the motor and collet.i use rubber tubing and hot glue to keep it working. bad news is you have to disassemble it to install a new connector.

I own a Dremel model 395 type 5 variable speed and it suddenly stopped working. I was wondering if it was common for the switches to go bad or if it's known for other parts to cause it not to turn on.

I would recommend going to Dremel.com and asking their tech section about this. I have one also and mine works fine other than a small amount of heat at the spindle area.

New Dremel 300 stopped working. What's wrong?

Something amazing just happened! On my monitor screen, window popped up that said, "ASK A QUESTION - LET OUR EXPERTS SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM FOR FREE".

I couldn't resist getting expert advice for free, so I clicked on the window. I was immediately taken to a magical world where I can pay for expert advice. I opted not to pay for expert advice. The next day, I was asked if the help I received was helpful. So here I am posting this response. I haven't received any expert advice yet, but when I do....!

Is there a reset button for a Dremel Multi Pro?

When the brushes go on my Dremel, it just stops, sometimes erratically - no smell or burning.
