Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

My Book Essential does not show on My Computer - Can't access files.

I have tried everything. Plugging, unplugging, disk management, device manager. It show under the device manager and disk management but not when I explore in My Computer. I managed to find my files with a free download of GeDataBack for NTSF but the liscense is 64 bucks...that's 15 gallons of gas...Anyway I know the drive is working..this happened after I did a full system recovery on my VAIO...I actually repartitioned my internal hard drive space for more operating system files. At the time I forgot to unplug the My Book. Computer is recovered and reloaded and works great but the damn external drive is inaccessable. It shows up as a primary partition in the disk management as disk 1. The internal drive which is partitioned is listed as disc 0 with drives c and d. C is the system drive and D the logical drive. I downloaded Western Digital Data Life Guard and performed an extensive disc check and the My Book passed. I'm spending time on the net looking for the solution. Any ideas?

Well, I though about doing that as you say, there were several similar posts on the net suggesting drive removal and implanting into the computer but I couldn't give up. I wound up spending 64 bucks on GetDataBack File Recovery Software which I downloaded from the net. I got all my files back. This program goes through the back door of a drive somehow, got all the files back...music I bought on the net. Anyway it worked; but the drive was still unusable. My Computer could not recognize it although it was listed as a functional drive in Disk Management. That's all though, D M wouldn't let me reformat or do anything else except list the properties of the drive and it's associated drivers. I used the WD Data life Guard program from the manufacturer trying to get it to work and I finally gave up and just wrote the drive to zero's in order to make it functional again. I was then finally able to reformat it to NTSF and have a usable and functional external hard drive. There is probably a much easier solution using the registery edit but I coudn't find one that really made me feel sure enough about going that route, although I think that probably that was what it all mounted up to was editing in the registry so the drive would be recognized in My Computer. Wish I would have taken computer classes in college.

On a Mac- OSX - Last week it would mount (partitioned into two sections), you could see the files but then when you clicked on them they would disappear (memory space was the same).

NOW it wont even mount - I've tried running Techtool Pro & Disk Utility on it but the driver still will not show. All I want are my files back. Do you think the $60 program you downloaded will help me?

No matter what I tried, I ws unable to get my "MyBook" working. My solution? Remove from case and voila, it's just a seial ATA drive attached to a small circuit board which converts it to USB. Disconnect from the circuitboard and plug into the motherboard. Imstant success. It failed as an external drive three weeks after the warranty ran out. WD support was zero help.

Try unplugging from usb and plugging it back in. Also, you may need a SAS driver for your computer to recognize the drive. Some drives have internal encryption and require a driver before the computer recognizes them. Check the Mfg website to see whether this drive requires one.

HI, RULE #1 IS "ALWAYS" ATTACH/PLUGIN WHILE PC IS SHUT-DOWN. NEVER CONNECT/DISCONNECT WHILE RUNNING. GO TO CONTROL PANEL, DEVICE MANAGER, SCROLL TO BOTTOM, CLICK + WD DRIVE MANAGEMENT DEVICES, SEE IF WD SES DEVICES IS THERE IF IT IS, DOUBLE CLICK IT. A WINDOW SHOULD POP-UP SEE IF IT SAY'S THIS DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY. IF NO DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED, CLICK UPDATE DRIVER. IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, GO TO CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT, MAXIMIZE PAGE, SEE IF MY BOOK IS THERE. IF IT IS, RIGHT CLICK, THEN MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE...........I HOPE THIS HELPS..........JEFFXC

If the SATA-to-USB converter is working properly, then Disk Management should show the device, assuming that the disk-drive itself is working properly.

Sometimes the drivve letter that gets assigned to the drive will get bumped by another device. The links below will help you check Disk Management to see if you need to reassign the drive. Also if you did not get a proper disconnect from the computer you may want to try to connect the drive to another computer to see if it will detect.

The unit id defective - hardware fault. Your last hope is to remove the actual hard disk from within it, put it directly in a desktop and try to access it from there. If even now you can't then the hard disk is dead and everything on it is lost.

When I try to access the drive it tells me it is Not formatted.

What OS are you running? If Windows, try unplugging the USB cable, restart your system the reconnect the USB, go to computer management/disk management and see if your drive is visible and check its status. Should see it as Disk 1 basic, online, healthy. I had a like issue with a Maxtor external enclosure and that resolved the issue. All the data was present.

Is the drive booting up when you plug it in? have you tried going to disk managment and initilizing/formatting the disk? go to start-controlpanel-administrative tools, computer management.on the left click on disk management.this should show all drives connected to the computer.Your drive should be file system NTFS. you can right click the drive and format or change file system type. hope this helps

Not showing my external hard drive

I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM! or at least this works for my my book 1tb external hard drive. when i initially connect it i get the 'new device detected' pop up thing, but then it doesn't show on my computer. However, I have found that keeping the device pllugged into the computer but removing then replacing the power source from the device causes it to show up. That's all I did, unplug the power cord on the back and replace it. The computer says 'new hardware detected' and 'found my book mass storage device,' then it appears on my my computer tab. Hope this works with you as well!
