TV has picture but no sound (cathode ray TV) - Televison & Video

Thank you very much. Before I contacted fixya.com I had cycled as a first step but probably for no more than a minute or two. I also had forgotten to try a DVD.

I ran a DVD and the sound was fine. TV set not at fault. I powered down and ran an errand to allow adequate time. Fired everything back up and the sound works.

Other TV sets in the house, directly connected to cable, never lost sound. The only TV that lost sound was the one connected to the "box." I now have a tiny bit of "snow" in the picture but the sound is restored.

My conclusion: the set is fine, the problem is in the "box." I'll call the cable company.

Your suggestions woke me up. Case closed. Well done.

    Cal.

Hmm, usually the problem is the other way around! And this is on all inputs with the TV? For example, with regular TV viewing and with DVD watching, it does not have any sound? And of course I have to ask the obvious question - you are sure it is not muted? If you mute then unmute does it appear to be trying to do it (displaying something on the screen for example)?

Have you tried simply unplugging the TV for a good 10 minutes from the power source, then replugging it in? If it continues to have no sound it could be a failed sound module inside the TV. I doubt both speakers in the TV failed at the same time, so this is really all that makes sense.

Thanks
Tim

I have a Mitsubishi HD 1080 model ws-48315 and at first I had no picture only sound but when I started to adjust the lamps focus and color brightness the picture stastarted to come in but it now blinks

It sounds to me that the cathode ray tubes or the high voltage splitter is going bad. There is no lamp in this TV. it uses the older CRT type display technology. Time for a new TV.

Cathode emission check for colour picture tubes

How to check the colour cathodes of a picture tube for emission

It is very easy to cehck the emission of the cathodes of a colour picture tube. Assuming all other circuit parts are working, including LOT [Line output Transformer] and video output section. There is proper screen voltage; focus voltage and EHT [Extra High Tension]. Locate the three cathode points on the base card, usually marked as Gk, Bk and Rk. Keep the brightness, contrast and colour control to zero position. Take a wire of suitable length, say 50cms or so, tie its one end to TVs chasis [negative]. Take one resistor of value 100K 1W, tie its one end to the other end or the wire, thus one end of this resistor is now connected to negative chasis and the other end of it is free now. Hold this resistor with with some electrically noncunductive material [using hand gloves will be better]; switch on the Tv, wait a minute or so to get it warm up. Just make a touch at each cathode of the picture tube base card solderings. Just one touch will give you a colour of the respecive cathode on the screen. Never hold it for long time. This process can be used for checking cathode emission of any type of Cathode Ray Picture tubes.

Tv comes on sound only. No picture

If this is the old style CRT TV then it sounds like the picture tube has gone, the Cathode Ray Tube is not an economical replacement.....unfortunately it will have to be disposed of and replaced!

I have a Sony KP-61XBR-300 rear projection tv---- Picture went out. Is this the light bulb and if so where is located. Can I get it out myself?

This is a projection TV: it uses cathode ray tubes instead of bulbs. If you have a black screen, but still have sound, then the problem is on one of the circuit boards. Very few parts are available for this model.

Picture has blue shadow/trail? sony KP-53HS10

This sounds like a bad blue CRT (cathode ray tube) The repair on this is a major job. Beyond the tube replacement it would then require some convergence alignment and possibly some setup on the other related service adj. such as geometry. You may want to get an estimate from a reputable local repair company.
