After working initially, the screen on this LCD now seems totally black. On very close view, there is barely some output on screen, but very dark. I've used the cable in, as well as composite inputs. Sound is fine, but video is useless. Any ideas?

Re: Really dark (not usable) screen
The backplane power supply, and or the backplane lamps are probably dead. In some models these parts are replaceable. In most of the models, the backplane lamps are an integral part of the screen unit, and cannot be replaced without changing the complete screen unit.

does the light stay or blinking and how about the screen display totally black or a white screen. you can see in a dark room if their is a white screen. if totally black screen then with sound the cause is could be bad inverter board or screen back light. if a white screen it was the t-con board not working good.
If half screen is affected it will be either a board (LCD and Plasma have different names) but in those one board drives each side of the screen unit--worst case is the display panel itself which is fatal from a cost point of view.
when it goes dark can you pull up tv menu if not or ch number take a flash light and press menu on side of tv or remote and shine light on the screen, look really close and if can see any images such as letters or number then very possible have a defective lcd panel
Lcd tv sets are lit by small glass florescent tubes called cold cathodes and, are powered by: ballasts called inverters... these go out just like your office florescent lighting the parts can be purchased online from electronic parts houses and, are easily replaced
Your LCD TV uses backlights and they can be slightly visible when viewing a letterbox movie. However, if the light is really bleeding into the black, there could be a problem, but mosty this is common.
if the picture is REALLY dark, like you can just barely see it in a lit room, then the backlight might not be lit. LCD TVshave backlight that shines through the LCD screen which allows you to see the picture.
If it's not the backlight then it would be the brightness/contrast settings that need to be adjusted. If the picture used to be normal and all of a sudden went dark, verify the backlight. Normally you can look through the slots on the top of the set and determine if the backlight is on. If you can see a bright light through any of the slots, the backlight is probably OK... go after the brightness/contrast settings.
