These are usually symptoms of a failed lid switch. The following link explains how to replace the lid switch step-by-step:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-rep...

Open and close the lid and listen for a distinctive "clicking" noise.
The lid switch should activate as the lid closes. If you do not hear
the switch, chances are the switch has come loose, the lid strike (small
plastoic piece on the washer lid on some models) has broken off, or the
switch itself is broken. Please post back with your model number and I
can confirm how your washer is configured. I hope this helps you.

PS This repair should only cost you about $25 to $35 if you decide to do
it yourself. Also, you do not have to drain the wash tub to repair the
switch. Once the problem is corrected, the tub will drain on its own.
This will save you the effort of having to bail water out of the tub.

Check for a modular unit in the machine that controls the wash action of the machine. If it has malfuctioned there will be no power for the motor. Check with the spares departtment if your machine has this unit

Whirlpool Washer - Imperial Series Quiet Wash 2

your washers drain hose is too far down the drain pipe which is causing a siphoning action pull the washers drain hose out pipe some you should be able to hear water dropping into the pipe the reason it only happens in the rinse cycle is because the water from wash is being drained and before the water vacuum is broken the rinse water comes in causing it to keep draining
