Hi,

First clean the coils. The dust and pet hair cause over heating and will stop the cooling process.
If this does not work, call a repairman. Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

All the things in your refrigerator are getting warm. The freezer is thawing and when you listen closely you hear a click with a buzz, another little click and then nothing for a few minutes. Then the same thing starts all over again. You fear the worst and you are probably correct. The compressor has decided that it will not start anymore.

When this happens, sometimes it is the fault of the capacitor or the start relay. There is about as good a chance that changing these start components will work as it is that it will not work. If you can do the changing your self then you should get the parts and do the work. You have half a chance that it will work. If you will need to pay someone else to do the work then you need to look hard at what it will cost you and what the unit is worth, then decide to take a chance or not.

If you do decide to change the start components then you need to make sure that you unplug the refrigerator long enough the let the compressor cool completely. Even with new components a hot compressor often will not start. Believe me if your compressor is trying to start and can't then it will be very hot!

If you end up needing to change the compressor, get a complete price so that you can make a good evaluation of the cost versus replacement. Make sure that the replacement will not cost more than half the replacement costs. Why pour money into something that will have something else fail before too long? Also remember that federal laws require a certification to handle refrigerants and persons doing the job need to recover or reclaim all refrigerants and handle them accordingly. A compressor replacement is NOT a DIY job. Specialized equipment is needed to do the job properly

For those that are having cool weather right now you do not think about the problems that can happen to your refrigerator when the first hot weather hits. Every year when the first warm days come along I get calls from people that complain that their refrigerator is not cooling like it should. Many times the fix is a very simple one. Something that a good vacuum cleaner and an air compressor can easily fix.

When I get there or if I ask them the bottom front of their refrigerator looks something like this.

And the underneath of the refrigerator looks like this, or even worse.

To fix this problem, a little cleaning is all that is needed. When the room temperature is cooler the air going over the condenser coil will still get enough heat away to keep the refrigerator cooling. However when the room starts to heat up and the air does not absorb as much of the heat the refrigerator will start to get warmer.

Pull the front grill off of the refrigerator and wash that out. Then if you have a good vacuum with a crevice tool, reach in from the front and the back of the refrigerator to remove as much of the dust and dirt as possible. Often I will then use my air compressor to blow out more of the dust and dirt and continue to vacuum as needed. Use patience as you do this, as it will take time and blowing from both the front and back a number of times to really get the coil to clean out.

Now that you know what to do, why wait for the warm weather and for the refrigerator to start acting up before cleaning the coil? Get out the soap and water, the vacuum and air compressor and clean it out now. The cleaning will also help your refrigerator to run more efficiently and save you money.

My frig is running but not cooling - frig is 50 degrees, freezer 40 degrees, cleaned the coils, etc GE side by side coils in bottom if frig side feel cool, "box" between freezer and frig side is not blowing...

I can help you diagnose the problems with your GE. Several things can cause these symptoms. All you need is a voltage meter patience and a want to, to repair and do it better than a paid technician. In most cases with the PSS26MSRSS the defrost heater is the cause for this. Look into rear of your freezer and back wall. Is Ice or frost building on rear wall? If yes unplug and prepair to remove contents in freezer compartment. Remove rear panel in freezer and use hair dryer to defrost ice until the defrost heater is visible. BRB , Sea Breeze

Freezer is not keeping cold and forming icicles along wall

It may just be a defrost timer. Search online for information. There is plenty to be had. Check with the website of GE for a parts breakdown or your manual if you still have it for the location of the defrost timer. You can turn it manually so it goes into defrost. Does the unit seem to be running all the time and never shuts off? If so that timer could be stuck in the cool mode and the evaporator is freezing up solid so air wont flow over it to properly cool. I've had two refrigerators I've had to repair that had defrost timer problems. One stuck in the defrost cycle and wouldn't turn on to cool, the other did what you are describing. It stuck in the cool cycle and wouldn't defrost you may need to manually bypass the cooling cycle several times to allow it to completely defrost. Usually it cycles in cool from 6,8 or ten hours and only stays in defrost for over twenty minutes. That should defrost it and allow it to start cooling again. If you notice that frost has disappeared inside on the wall replace the timer.
