Well, I need to more details, but let me tell you about the "Printing Preference", check the "Print Quality" and change it to Best or Normal.
To do this, follow the steps (if you haven't done yet).
Click "Start" > "Printers and Faxes" and then on the Printers and faxes windows, right click the "Hp Deskjet 5440..." and select "Printing Preferences", you'll see the printing preferences box like this:
POOR PRINT QUALITY, CARTRIGAGES ARE - 554b584.jpg

Click "Features" tab and check the settings (I've circled them) and set them as illustrated.. 1. Plain Paper
2. Normal
3. Basic RLT photo fix
Apply the changes and let me know if the problem persists. You'll likely need to update the printer's drivers. Sometimes, cleaning is also necessary. I'll assist you further.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I'm not quite satisfied with color and black tone. What settings would you recommend.

You do not say what exact model of printer you are using so any answer will be generic rather than specific.

Poor colour and black tone can be as a result of various factors:
1. Poor paper quality that you are printing on.
2. Poor ink or toner quality being used.
3. Use of Ink / Toner saving modes or software.
4. Worn or damaged printer components such as the fuser roll on a laser printer and other similar consumables with a limited page use life.
5. Poor quality content being printed, i.e. low quality images being printed at too high a print resolution.

The Lexmark Impact S305 printer requires all the cartridges to have ink in them to continue printing - even if you're printing using black ink only. To print true black, you actually use some of the color ink.
Note: Leaving the color cartridge empty or dry isn't good for the printer. It can lead to poor print quality if you want to print color in the future.

PRINTER 5440, POOR PRINT QUALITTY HAS GONE FROM GREAT TO BARELY LEGIBLE, FAIRLY NEW CARTRIGAGES

Depending on the age of the printer, the service staion may need to be cleaned. The service station is where the cartridges "park" when they are not in use. Over time ink can collect in this area and therefore the ink cartridges do not get a thorough cleaning. I would go to HP's website and look for cleaning instructions for your printer model. Hope this helps

Hi,
Try cleaning the print heads with rubbing alcohol to remove any dry ink, also clean the rollers too.
If the unit has a reset button or option i suggest you try that.

Good luck.
